Chatlog below the cut!

[14:05] Is everyone using Crunchyroll?
01[14:05] I’m using Netflix.
[14:06] I’m using Hulu. Crunchyroll keeps skipping to the end of the video.
[14:06] Netflix here
01[14:06] Oh yeah, I remember where we left off, they’re all going to conquer the schools of Japan, yeah?
[14:06] Yup. Raid trip.
[14:06] This was good after that tournament arc. While it was saved by al the character development
01[14:06] Wait, is this their equivalent to the School Trip episode!?
[14:07] Yup
01[14:07] And yeah, I think that was one of the least painful tournament arcs I’ve seen.
[14:07] Mosdef
01[14:07] (Indigo League in Pokemon remains the best.)
[14:07] I could cosplay the tracksuit versions. ^^
01[14:08] (Wait, no, I forgot, technically Yakitate Japan is nothing but tournament arcs. Those are all the best.)
[14:08] Because magic bread is awesome.
[14:08] FoME, how did you become indebted to me?
[14:08] I gotta watch that.
[14:08] Jinx.
01[14:08] WORLD-DESTROYING, TIME-TRAVEL-INDUCING MAGIC BREAD
[14:08] Maybe a future liveblog idea, Fro?
[14:08] BREAD TAHAT GUARANTEES YOU WILL GO TO HEAVEN.
01[14:09] Hmm, I was half expecting the opening credits sequence to change after the arc shift. Maybe next ep, this is the halfway mark of the series isn’t it?
[14:09] Ad.
[14:09] paused
01[14:09] I still think my favorite is either the bread that turns you into Gamera or the bread that teleports you to Middle-Earth and then becomes Sauron.
[14:09] And the next credit sequence is kind of spoilery at this juncture.
[14:09] I need to watch this don’t I?
[14:10] The bread becomes Sauron?
01[14:10] Hmm, possibly Viga. I’m still pondering what to do after we finish Kill la Kill, though it looks like new MLP will be sooner than I expected.
01[14:10] Yes, the bread becomes Sauron.
[14:10] O_O
[14:10] I’m back.
[14:10] I’m tempted to suggest that we watch a Chip Cheezum Metal Gear LP
01[14:10] So, yeah, this school is really, really militant.
[14:11] Mako-chan! <3
01[14:11] I’m still waiting for the part where this becomes a CRITIQUE of militant nationalism like Charles Dunbar claimed, so far it’s looking like an endorsement.
01[14:11] Also, blech, Mako.
[14:11] “It’s my mind that’s boggled!”
01[14:12] Haha, it’s funny because her level of geography knowledge would be normal for an American hihg-schooler.
01[14:12] …Oh, for a second I thought that WAS Ryuko, wearing glasses and dressed as a boy for some reason.
01[14:12] …I am really bad at telling the characters in this show apart, aren’t I?
[14:13] No, there’s definitely a resemblance. It’s the hair.
[14:13] There’s a recipe for the croquettes I left at home.
[14:13] 🙁
01[14:13] The scruffy teacher with the glasses IS one of the two guys with a sniper rifle during the tournament arc, right? Those aren’t two separate characters?
[14:13] Right
[14:13] You are correct.
[14:13] He’s the one who takes his shirt off
[14:14] We interrupt your introspective moment to bring you crazy yelling people.
01[14:14] Lol, okay, the boy opening the window is the first time I’ve laughed out loud watching this show that I can recall.
[14:15] lol
01[14:15] Ah, he’s the Intrepid Reporter standing up to the Fascist Machine State.
01[14:15] Oh for fucks sake.
01[14:15] Shut up Ryuko, get in the Eva.
[14:16] Ad.
[14:16] I can’t wait to see what Trigger does net after this
[14:16] are you guys familar with Inferno Cop
[14:16] ?
01[14:17] I’ve seen like two or three episodes.
[14:17] Not familiar
01[14:17] Pretty absurd, kinda amusing.
[14:17] It makes even less sense than Kill la Kill.
[14:17] Same studio. 2 minute episodes. Crazy !
[14:17] I’m back.
[14:17] This show is big on crowd scenes full of identical dudes
[14:18] Revocs make me think its Reebok but pronounced with an accent.
[14:18] Fun fact: The No-Star students are all unique in design.
01[14:18] I do like how evil-lady’s speeches to her troops are staged like fashion shows.
[14:18] The Ominous German Chanting is also a treat.
[14:18] Is this her first appearance so far?
01[14:19] *facepalm*
[14:19] She’s had a few appearances
01[14:19] COVERS
01[14:19] I only just got that!
01[14:19] Also, is she FONDLING her OWN DAUGHTER?
01[14:19] Ew.
[14:19] I mean out in the open. Not just a voice
[14:19] Dracula logic. No one recognizes the name when it’s reversed.
01[14:19] Yeah, we’ve seen her a couple of times.
[14:19] She got in a helicopter
[14:19] and yeah…THIS IS WHY I DROPPED THIS SERIES AT ONE POINT! ARGH! I really hate her
[14:20] Yeah, Ragyo is kind of… well, there’s a reason one of her fan nicknames is “Mama Bad Touch.”
[14:20] It gets worse too… 🙁
[14:20] Viga, be very strict about no spoilers
01[14:21] Yeah, please no comments about things to come from the people who’ve seen the show before.
[14:22] Ad.
[14:22] Last one.
01[14:23] This is feeling very much like a prep episode so far.
01[14:23] You know, setting up the next arc.
01[14:23] And apparently that ad killed FoME.
[14:23] Back.
01[14:23] WB FoME.
[14:23] Wish I knew why that happens.
01[14:23] Are you back from the ad as well?
[14:24] Yes.
[14:24] The covers/revocs thing is a little bit harder to spot because the terminal ‘s’ doesn’t move
[14:24] I didn’t notice till now.
[14:24] IIRC this episode is the first time they say “covers” so imo it isn’t possible to spot before that
01[14:24] …Why are they filling armored cars with trash cans full of basketballs?
01[14:25] Or… spiked footballs? Da fuq?
01[14:25] Oh ffs.
[14:25] Athletics clubs. What did you expect them to use?
01[14:26] Okay, I’m declaring a new principle, I shall call it the Law of Korra: Programmatic characters angsting is really obnoxious and boring.
[14:26] Programmatic characters?
[14:27] Characters in TV programs. I think.
01[14:27] Characters that exist solely to fulfill plot functions, as opposed to having their behavior emerge organically from interactions between motivations. It’s related closely to being a flat character, but a flat character isn’t necessarily programmatic.
01[14:27] And a programmatic character may not be entirely flat, if they’re cliche enough.
01[14:28] Ah, of course newsboy is evil.
[14:28] At least Ryuko’s over herself.
01[14:28] That’s true.
01[14:28] Wait, so Nui is a master of disguise now too?
[14:29] Grand Coutier. What’s a disguise but a change of clothes?
01[14:29] I do love her leaning on the titles.
01[14:29] Well, that was unexpected.
01[14:30] Is Satsuki about to rescue Ryuko?
[14:30] Nui! <3
[14:30] Unwinnable boss battles are always frustrating.
01[14:31] Oh shit, this is the midseries revamp of the main character’s mecha, isn’t it?
01[14:32] Okay, that picked up at the end.
[14:32] Yeah, this isn’t a series content with letting its characters stew in their own angst.
01[14:32] Still don’t feel like there’s sufficient investment in Ryuko’s nonexistant character to care about her angst, but at least it was over quickly.
01[14:33] Anyway, ’twas fun!
[14:34] ‘Twas. 🙂
[14:34] Crystal later today, right?
[14:34] Yup
01[14:34] I believe there’s no Sailor Moon today, right?
01[14:34] I actually don’t think there’s an episode.
[14:34] I mean’t yup to twas fun not crystal
[14:34] It’s been two weeks…
01[14:34] It’s First and Third Saturday, not every two weeks.
01[14:34] This is the fifth Saturday in August.
[14:34] Nope. It’s just 4 up
[14:34] Oh. And you’re right.
[14:34] Huh, it’s true, 5 isn’t out yet
[14:35] Next week, then.
[14:35] 5 is next week
01[14:35] Yeah, I’m pretty sure the new Crystal is next week, so that’s when we’ll have the double live blog.

Kill la Kill chatlog below the cut!

[13:59] So, when we left off, Nui had interrupted the boss marathon and challenged our heroine
[13:59] And Satsuki actually seemed to be rooting for Ryuko
01[13:59] Yep.
[13:59] Ready…
[13:59] Click
[14:00] Ooh, her stick-on fingernails have hidden snaggers
[14:00] Dunh dunh DUNH…
[14:00] The one-armed man shows himself.
[14:01] Wait, wrong show.
[14:01] “Hi! I killed your dad! =D”
01[14:01] I still don’t actually believe it was her, she doesn’t look anything like the sillhouette in the flashback.
[14:01] Memory is a tricky thing.
01[14:01] Unless she deliberately dressed like Satsuki for the kill… but then why reveal her part now?
[14:02] Something tells me Satsuki’s mom is orchestrating something
01[14:02] Yeah, but this ain’t Utena. This show isn’t smart enough to play with the flexibility of memory.
[14:02] Ad.
[14:03] And we’re back.
[14:04] Did Ryuko actually witness her dad’s death?
[14:04] Oops, Ryuko’s getting careless
[14:04] From the flashback, Ryuko found him already stabbed with one half of the scissors left in him
01[14:04] I thought in the flashbacks she was outside the house when it happened and saw someone fleeing.
[14:04] Dat homoerotic subtext
[14:05] “Narrow-minded,” she says
01[14:05] Oh god, Nui’s a shipper.
[14:05] Yeesh, it’s not even SUBtext, it’s jut text
[14:05] Supertext?
[14:06] GAH
[14:06] No closeups please
[14:06] She manages to be creepier than Mako’s entire family
[14:06] Because of course she has a weaponized tape measure
[14:06] Whoa, Ryuko’s dad could kick ass
[14:07] He’s Pai Mei
[14:08] Now THIS is a villain speech
[14:08] Oh… she lost her eye doing that?
[14:08] Wow
[14:08] And now we know why she has an eyepatch.
[14:09] Ad.
01[14:09] Huh.
01[14:09] Guess they must have changed their mind on what happened some time after animating Ryuuko’s flashback.
[14:10] We’re back.
01[14:10] That or, of course, Nui’s still lying, but it seems unlikely at this point.
[14:10] I figured they just used the art to lie
[14:10] I’m pretty sure that’s the case.
[14:10] Whoa
[14:10] Overload
[14:10] GAH
[14:11] Satsuki to the rescue!
[14:11] Is Mako friends with the Elite Four now?
[14:11] He… he does?
[14:12] Are you really that surprised?
[14:12] Tautology
01[14:12] If the next episode involves them shouting technobabble to recover Ryuko while she has a weird out-of-body experience and meets her dad…
[14:12] AHAHAH
[14:12] Gamagoori telling a considerably-more-handsome guy to cover up
[14:13] Ah, the Elite Four are coming to help Ryuko?
[14:13] And we see Satsuki’s Eva form
[14:13] Everyone to the rescue!
[14:13] “House call?”
[14:13] This episode is awesome
[14:14] Such a reassurance
[14:14] Ad.
[14:14] Last one. Yay.
[14:14] Yay indeed
01[14:15] The episode is only half over, I’m worried it’ll be one long boring fight scene from here…
[14:15] And we’re back.
[14:16] And Nui is a Paper Mario character.
[14:16] So, perv teacher is finally getting off his ass and doing something
[14:16] Whoa
[14:17] Nui is not going to go down that easy, but it was an awesome trap
[14:18] Everyone’s turned up
[14:18] Huh?
01[14:18] Why is there LAVA?
[14:18] Why not?
[14:18] Her blood is that hot.
[14:19] Dat symbolism
[14:19] Ooh, they’re going to kiss
[14:19] So, when’s Mako going to arrive with the transfusion?
[14:19] Kamui vs Kamui: More sparkly than the Twilight Saga.
[14:20] But she’sgoing to interfere anyway
[14:21] Huh? Is this going to end like the first Pokémon movie?
[14:21] Or not
[14:21] Much more liquid space.
01[14:21] Cooldown hug?
[14:21] Literally.
[14:21] “How I was?” When?
[14:21] Ah yes, the Fight Club
01[14:22] …Or you could break her neck.
[14:22] That’s how they draw burn marks?
[14:22] Yeah, it is
[14:22] I think they’re like grill lines.
[14:22] Ah, that makes sense… the Life Fibers
[14:22] D’aww
[14:23] Whoa, literal rubber neck
[14:23] “Drama,” she calls it
01[14:23] Wow, those things coming out of Mako’s face are DISGUSTING
[14:23] …What?
[14:24] Chekhov’s Red Herring
[14:24] Is Nui seriously going to put up with being banned?
[14:24] Ah, of course not
[14:25] Don’t close the window, guys. There’s more after the credits.
[14:25] I figured that, given how early it was
01[14:25] So can we just have the rest of the show be about Satsuki already?
[14:25] Well, something tells me they’re going to be friends before too ong
01[14:26] I mean, she’s awful, but way more interesting than anybody else, and she has more interesting antagonists if Nui’s anything to go by.
[14:26] Prediction (don’t tell me if I’m right): Satsuki needs Ryuko’s help to take down Nui and her mom
[14:28] Does Ryuko even care about the other academies?
01[14:28] Oh ho, so she’s going to conquer the remaining schools.
01[14:28] Presumably to find more candidates for high-level uniforms for the army she’s going to need to take on her mom and Nui?
[14:29] And so, field trips are the next high school experience to be militarized.
01[14:29] Yep.
01[14:30] Okay, final thoughts before I post this up?
[14:30] So a ways back, me and Sylocat established that Satsuki is the game designer, and she’s been setting herself up as the final boss
01[14:30] And then meet back here at 3 for Sailor Moon?
[14:30] Well,my prediction is on the record
[14:30] Nui rolls up and tells Ryuko that no, SHE is the final boss, and also reveals the secret Satsuki has been holding in front of Ryuko like a carrot, and almost gets Ryuko killed
[14:31] Berserk Ryuko is the weirdest Ganmen.
[14:31] And then that last conversation, Satsuki more or less reestablishes the previous dynamic where she is the final boss who knows the secrets Ryuko wants
01[14:31] Yeah, it’s even weirder than the banana thing.

[14:00] …Who is that?
[14:00] Umbrella person?
[14:00] You’ll find out.
[14:01] Dang, Nonoi has a dirty mouth when she’s angry
[14:01] Well… that’s quite an opening
[14:01] Is she the fifth member of the Elite Four, who left before they got big? (Don’t actually answer that, FoME.)
[14:01] Out of curiosity, is every episode title in this show a song title? I’m fairly certain a lot are.
[14:02] Really? I hadn’t noticed.
[14:02] Yup. It’s the naming motif. Old J-Pop hits.
[14:02] According to TV Tropes, anyway.
[14:02] They’re all lines spoken in the episodes, too, aren’t they?
[14:02] Ad at the end of the theme song.
[14:03] I’m not sure that anyone said “trigger” in the episode named “trigger”
[14:03] Let us know when it’s done
[14:03] Hmm, maybe not, then.
[14:03] It was made by Trigger. Does that count?
[14:03] I do remember that every Madoka episode was named after a line spoken in the episode

[14:03] Yes, Gurren Lagann, too–and every arc used lines from a different character. In a font associated with that character.
[14:04] We’re good.
[14:04] Rego
[14:04] …The Can Can, because of course it’s the Can Can
[14:04] So, it’s a dogfight rather than a catfight
[14:04] Which is actually from a ballet about Orpheus, dunno if that’ll be significant.
[14:04] Can’t it be both?
[14:05] Sequence breaker Ryuko.
[14:05] Ah, of course… she’s trying to glitch out of the boss arena
[14:06] Now that’s an impending-doom face
[14:06] Collar McDatapants: Tumblr’s spirit animal.
[14:06] Ouch
[14:06] You do not mess with Collar McDatapants’s laptop
[14:06] She exploded into trombones.
[14:07] Just noticed the skeletal extra arms. Weird.
[14:07] Ryuko has learned too much from them
[14:07] Note that the skull on Nonon’s hat is that of the monkey from her flashback.
[14:07] Ah, and now the Uberpervert is back
[14:08] ..oh.
[14:08] Ah, she has another form?
[14:09] I love Nonon’s theme attacks
[14:09] Gee, that’s not a suggstive shot at all
[14:09] Ooh, Nonon’s hacked the game!
[14:09] Ryuko is paralyzed! She may be unable to move!
[14:10] Man, I hate when the boss has attacks that do damage AND inflict status.
[14:10] Whoa… she’s dancing to the rhythm
[14:11] like Po, in Kung Fu Panda 2
[14:11] Ahahahah
[14:11] “This is what I mean by pure stupidity”
[14:12] Dueling leitfmotifs!
[14:12] No, don’t get into a magic beam duel, Nonon…

[14:12] LITERAL theme music powerup. Haven’t seen one of those since AKB0048.
[14:12] Roll over, Beethoven.
[14:13] “Curtains”
[14:13] Did he just unzip his hoodie just to gasp?
[14:13] Yes, yes he did
[14:13] Ad.
[14:13] Who are you, Umbrella girl? What do you know?
[14:13] At least Nonon gets to keep the monkey bones.
[14:13] Let me guess, Umbrella Person is a superboss of some sort?
[14:13] (don’t answer that, FoME)
[14:14] I’m not that bad, am I?
[14:14] we’re just teasing 🙂
[14:14] Sorry
[14:14] You did ignore the first warning that one day. I only had to be told once.
[14:14] It’s cool. We’re back.
[14:14] We all understand that speculation phrased in the form of a question is not meant to be answered.
[14:15] Ah, Collar McDatapants isn’t the only one collecting battle data
[14:15] Ah, a true Magic Bullet
[14:16] I’ve started calling that teacher “Mr. Kimura”
[14:16] Ouch
[14:16] Lol, yes.
[14:16] Nonon fights dirty
[14:17] AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
[14:18] ….Huh?
[14:18] “Sanageyama?”
[14:18] Sword Monkey.
[14:18] Ah, she doesn’t even have a Pokédex entry?
[14:18] “Mai Famili,” he shouts in English
[14:19] Ad.
[14:19] The plot thickens
[14:19] Satsuki is the only one who has any idea who she is

[14:19] Ah, of course Ryuko reverts to normal uniform. I was wondering how they were going to shoehorn in her transformation sequence this episode.
[14:19] I’m guessing she’s connected with Satsuki’s family somehow.
[14:20] And we’re back.
[14:21] Wow
[14:21] RAGYO Kiryuin?
[14:21] Satsuki’s mom gets the full supervillain treatment
[14:21] She fully levelled up her backlight.
[14:21] Oh, she’s Satsuki’s mom’s dressmaker.
[14:22] Ahah… she’s leaning on her own title card
[14:22] She just reached across the splitscreen!
[14:22] And stroking Satsuki’s hair from 10000 yards away
[14:22] She’s my favorite.
[14:22] ONe of her nicknames is Nui Pie, for obvious reasons.
[14:22] And of course she’s the most badass one of all
[14:22] Yo Sanegayama, when Satsuki tells you to gtfo, you should do that
[14:22] “I have a bad feeling about this,” says Senketsu
[14:23] Uh, Sword Monkey, I could have told you that was a bad idea
[14:24] Is Mako going to join the Elite Four at the end
[14:24] Nonon is disappointed by the failure of the exposition character.
[14:24] Of course the supervillain’s dressmaker knows the weak spots on the magic clothes.
[14:24] Dat symbolism
[14:24] Ah, but now, Ryuko can’t absorb Sword Monkey’s power, if Nui broke the key fiber
[14:25] I love that Nui has splitscreen-bridging powers
[14:25] She really is the Pinkie Pie of this show
[14:26] Huh? Satsuki is rooting for Ryuko?
[14:26] Well she clearly doesn’t like Nui
[14:26] Dunh Dunh DUNNNNH!
[14:26] What.
[14:27] Oh, it… is… ON.
[14:27] But she looks nothing like the sillhouette!

[14:27] This is a trick.
[14:27] And Ryuko’s falling for it
[14:27] Wow
[14:27] Yeah.
[14:27] And once she transforms, Rui can use the scissorblade to try to steal her uniform’s powers or something.
[14:28] Okay, this is getting more interesting now.
[14:28] Note also: Nui just spoiled the lever Satsuki was using to move Ryuko
[14:28] Especially Satsuki rooting for Ryuko.
[14:28] Yeah… I wanna see where this is going
[14:29] Plus, who are the Nudists going to use that bullet on now, Ryuko or Nui?
[14:29] Something tells me firing that bullet at Nui won’t end well for the Nudists
[14:29] The question is, are they smart enough to realize that (probably not, but you never know)
[14:29] Yeah, which is why I think it’s more likely.
[14:30] So, on a semi-related note, I’m entirely in favor of the double feature plan for next week.
[14:31] Yeah, nobody has weighed in with an opinion on that AT ALL.
[14:31] Well, I think it goes without saying that I’m in favor
[14:33] Double feature?
[14:33] Kill la Kill and the newest Sailor Moon Crystal.
[14:33] Every other week a new episode of Sailor Moon Crystal is released
[14:33] For the thursday post, Froborr alternates between liveblogging that and Utena Dumps
[14:34] Last week, instead of watching it alone he watched it with us after the KlK ep
[14:34] Ah yex
[14:34] I remember that
[14:34] Wednesday post, but yes.
[14:35] What do you think of doing two KlK episodes on weeks that don’t have a crystal ep? Would that lead to running out of KlK before the MLP hiatus ends?
[14:36] If we do run out of KlK, we could just pick something else
[14:36] Well, it’s twenty four episodes. We have thirteen left, and we’d be running through three every two weeks…
[14:36] Also, I’m pretty sure KlK is going to end anyway, well before the hiatus ends
[14:37] Even if we only watch one a week, we’ll still be done by November
[14:38] No, I want to stick with one Kill la Kill a week.

[14:05] Ooh, flashback
[14:05] “Revocs?” Is that a Reebok joke?
[14:05] No comment.
[14:05] Heheh, the way he’s sitting in that hallway on the laptop, this is an Eva reference.
[14:05] Ah, now it’s Sneakers
[14:06] Huh? It froze for me
[14:06] Let us know when it’s moving again?
[14:06] Okay, just a second
[14:07] I’ve had that happen when the connection to the streaming service is interrupted
[14:07] Okay, starting again
[14:07] The buffer just runs out
[14:07] Because of course she came there herself
[14:07] “Scamp,” she says
[14:08] The secret dream of every hacker
[14:08] Just reached the opening credits
[14:09] The secret origin of Collar McDatapants, everyone.
[14:09] lol
[14:09] That is my new official nickname for him
[14:10] Ad break.
[14:10] Ah, good, that means we’re resynced
[14:10] Oh no… I’m sorry, but it’s giving me two minutes of ads here.
[14:10] Yeesh
[14:11] Well, it gives me time to buffer more of it
[14:12] And we’re good.
[14:12] The second? He was the final one in the opening credits
[14:12] AHAH… Gamagoori
[14:12] Aw, he got demoted?
[14:13] Oh, Mako
[14:13] Ah, Mako wants to start a brawl in the stands, like a hockey game
[14:13] Ahah… he mutes them on his phone
[14:14] “Wild monkey?”

[14:14] “Different relationship?”
[14:14] Ooh, is that yuri subtext?
[14:14] The “Sana” in Sanagayama means monkey.
[14:14] Ah
[14:14] Each of the Elite Four has a bit of an animal motif going.
[14:14] So, what’s his combat form look like
[14:14] Ah, he’s Tron Robocop, of course
[14:15] With keyboards everywhere.
[14:15] That looks vaguely suggestive
[14:15] …is that a power button on the back of his head?
[14:15] Like Travis Touchdown recharging his lightsaber
[14:16] Ah, she skips right to the standard solution
[14:16] She’s right about this, it’s a really common shounen fight anime trop
[14:16] Genre savviness is a mighty weapon.
[14:16] Wait, he’s actually questioning the fantasy premise?
[14:17] “White butterflies on a snowman?”
[14:17] He’s the nerd, of course he is
[14:17] Ad.
[14:17] I thought it was a white cow eating marshmallows in a snowstorm
[14:17] Is it another 2-minute ad break?
[14:17] 75 seconds. On the last one now.
[14:18] Whew
[14:18] And we’re good.
[14:19] Whoa
[14:19] Operation: Sahaquiel
[14:19] There’s WAY too much episode left for this to be it.
[14:19] Is she going to fight two at once in this episode?
[14:20] Well, at least Ryuko is genre savvy
[14:20] “Does not compute”
[14:20] WHAT?
[14:20] He forfeits?

[14:20] I did not see that coming
[14:20] Yep, she’s gonna fight two in one episode
[14:21] Ad.
[14:22] That was… unexpected
[14:22] Roughly 100 seconds. Last one, thankfully.
[14:22] I like Houka
[14:22] er, Collar McDatapants
[14:22] Collar “Houka” McDatapants. The Third.
[14:22] He knows that we’re itching for the bigger fight
[14:23] Hey FoME, I remember when I saw this on Crunchyroll a while back, Gamagoori didn’t have underwear when he came to the stands. Am I recalling incorrectly?
[14:23] Watching now on Netflix, he has underwear
[14:23] And we’re good.
[14:23] Whoa, that crowd’s arm movements are creepy
[14:23] They’re both joining Mako in the stands
[14:24] Are they going to make out, or what?
[14:24] More yuri subtext.
[14:24] Oh good, it’s Drum Majorette.
[14:24] Oh, Mako.
[14:24] Her themed attacks are gonna be awesome
[14:25] Oh yeah, during the brief fanservice scene last episode there was a shot of Mako doing the blood out of nostrils thing
[14:25] * FoME Quit (Quit: Page closed)
[14:25] Sweet,she gets a mech.
[14:25] Holy shit
[14:25] Oh crap, it’s MADE OF SPEAKERS?
[14:25] * FoME has joined ##rabbitcube
[14:25] Win.
[14:26] She is my new favorte of the Elite Four
[14:26] She attacks with sonic waves, right?
[14:26] I knew when I didn’t see reactions to that, my connection had died.
[14:26] Eeyup

[14:26] Oh, music puns
[14:26] This is gonna be… oh, that is EPIC
[14:27] her theme music has the opening notes of Jingle Bells
[14:27] Ouch, that is some badass trash talk
[14:27] You cannot overcome the power of the William Tell Overture!
[14:28] Oh, they go back to Kindergarten?
[14:28] I thought Satsuki’s career started in middle school
[14:28] They were friends even before then
[14:28] Lol, she’s doing the sun thing from the jungle gym.
[14:28] Symbolism!
[14:29] Even when she was in kindergarden, hers were mighty eyebrows.
[14:29] Plus, you know, the whole shining light from above thing.
[14:29] Aww
[14:29] The yuri subtext is strong with this episode
[14:29] RECORDER MISSILE
[14:29] So yeah, that’s a popular ship
[14:30] And now she’s rules lawyering
[14:30] Throwing your sword always works.
[14:30] Speaking of making up rules
[14:30] Ouch
[14:31] Cymbal sawblades, of course
[14:31] Music score laser beams
[14:31] I knew her themed attacks were gonna be awesome, but not THIS awesome
[14:31] Music score BENDY laser beams. The best kind.
[14:32] I forgot it was called the “Naturals Election”
[14:32] Ooh, don’t become a one-trick pony, Ryuko
[14:32] Gamagoori and Collar McDatapants don’t give no fucks
[14:32] It’s cool, all those students in the audience have 1 star uniforms
[14:33] They’ll be fine
[14:33] Ooh, Ryuko goes full Eva!
[14:33] Rocket boot Ryuko? That’ll work.

[14:33] What was that you were saying about one-trick ponies, Sylo?
[14:33] My mistake
[14:33] Cliffhanger?
[14:33] And now the guy who’s even more perverted than the rest is coming back to the battlefield
[14:33] Cliffhanger.
[14:33] Ooh, she’s PISSED
[14:34] Yeah, Jakuzure is too cool to get only part of one episode.
[14:34] Air superiority complex
[14:35] I love the closing theme song
[14:35] So, that was a lot better than the last one.
[14:35] So yeah… I liked this episode
[14:35] Started meh, but the second half more than made up for it.
[14:36] Any final thoughts before I copypasta to the blog?
[14:36] I realized too late that I could have said “two popular ships”
[14:36] because Jakuzure’s flying speaker arsenal is also popular and arguably a ship

[14:00] *sigh*
[14:00] Let the tournament arc begin.
[14:01] So it’s a boss rush
[14:02] That’s right, I forgot, he showed he had a code of honor last episode
[14:02] AHAHAH
[14:02] Speaking of scheduling…
[14:03] So I’m guessing episodes 9-12 are the four Elite Four battles and then episode 13 where people keep telling me the series gets actually good?
[14:03] Oh, and let me know if you hit ads, as always.
[14:04] Not exactly.
[14:04] FoME, remember to neither confirm nor deny
[14:04] Hahah…
[14:04] She stole a store display
[14:05] *sigh* The show continues this pattern of having a funny visual, but then ruining the humor by having a character shout the reason it’s funny.
[14:05] STOP EXPLAINING THE JOKE, SHOW
[14:05] Wow
[14:05] Suddenly I like this guy
[14:06] I do like how Mako has become background.
[14:06] The show obviously doesn’t use cels, yet for this scene they’re mimicking the cel/background visual distinction.
[14:06] Is everyone quiet, or have I been disconnected without realizing it?
[14:07] FoME, you reading this?
[14:07] Ad, by the way.
[14:07] Paused
[14:07] I remember when I was  a kid, I was real pleased with myself when I realized I could tell when something in a looney tune was going to move just be looking at it
[14:07] And it’s over.
[14:07] That was quick.
[14:08] * FoME (442704d2@gateway/web/freenode/ip.68.39.4.210) Quit (Quit: Page closed)
[14:08] Round One:
[14:08] * FoME (442704d2@gateway/web/freenode/ip.68.39.4.210) has joined ##rabbitcube
[14:08] He looks COMPLETELY frickin’ ridiculous.
[14:08] Mummy?
[14:09] Ah, a gimp
[14:09] *facepalm*
[14:09] Oh yikes…
[14:09] Dat metaphor
[14:09] No, seriously, Gomogori went from pretty cool to kind of disgusting at the end of last episode.
[14:10] And now he’s spanking her.
[14:10] But the fanservice in this show is “satirical.” Right.
[14:10] Cloth. Armor.
[14:11] …Or not
[14:11] Like in D&D.
[14:11] Ad.
[14:11] And we’re back.
[14:12] Time to Tentacle Hentai is yet another anime equivalent to video games’ Time to Crate.
[14:13] Only Satsuki knows it’s not time to gloat yet
[14:14] Satsuki continues to be badass.
[14:14] Whoa
[14:14] Okay, that was pretty cool on Gomogori’s part too.
[14:15] …He got like three times bigger than during the fight.
[14:15] No wonder she picked him for the Elite Four
[14:15] He has Evangelion-calibre size-changing powers.
[14:15] He does that.
[14:15] Wow
[14:15] Satsuki is awesome
[14:16] Satsuki is easily and by far the best thing about this show. I am pretty much watching for her.
[14:17] She’s tryign to overload him, right?
[14:17] There is a plan, but that’s not it.
[14:18] He bit through the ball gag?
[14:18] It IS pretty self-serving garbage.
[14:18] AHAHAH… him calling her deviant.
[14:19] Oh jeez
[14:19] That’s… rather on-the-nose
[14:19] CONFORM
[14:19] Yeah. Just a bit.
[14:20] …Did the “ultimate whip of love” come out of his CROTCH?
[14:20] Did I just see that?
[14:20] Of course it did
[14:20] Where else?
[14:21] Well duh
[14:21] RYUKO… WINS
[14:22] NUDALITY
[14:22] lol
[14:22] Aww, she saves him
[14:22] …was he about to commit seppuku or stab himself in the crotch?
[14:22] …Either seems in-character.
[14:22] Seppuku.
[14:23] I think.
[14:23] Ah, this guy’s next
[14:23] He’s the one we know the least about so far
[14:23] Is next episode where he gets his character development?

[00:08] Okay, finally watching Kill la Kill ep 8, only 7 days late.
[00:09] And I’m Froborr2 because login shenanigans.
[00:09] *facepalm at natural selection pun*
[00:09] I’m watching the Crunchyroll version because of Netflix issues, so ads will occur, alas.
[00:10] * Froborr (45fad1c0@gateway/web/freenode/session) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[00:10] * Froborr2 is now known as Froborr
[00:10] Ha, true self restored!
[00:11] Ugh, I hate when the ads are much louder than the show.
[00:12] Hmm, so of course the people defining merit assume they get to be the top of the meritocracy without needing to compete.
[00:12] Welcome to every supposed meritocracy ever.
[00:13] Also, they still get their uniforms? Sort of negates the purpose of NATURAL selection, doesn’t it?
[00:13] This is like an episode of Community.
[00:14] Well, like about 15 episodes of Community.
[00:14] Only those usually found a way to be funny.
[00:15] Ohhh, only the people with special uniforms are competing.
[00:15] Still negates the natural selection thing.
[00:17] Ryuko backstory is… exactly as expected.
[00:18] Wait, who the fuck is Mikisugi?
[00:19] Aw, if I gave a shit about Ryuko or whatsername’s family, that scene would be sweet.
[00:20] This driving scene HAS to be an Utena reference. That’s kinda awesome.
[00:21] Wow, creative name guys.
[00:22] Okay, for once this show’s silliness is silly in a good way I like the spinny car.
[00:24] …ew.
[00:24] I… REALLY don’t need to see 13-year-old Gamagori’s discovery of BDSM. I’ve never been more grateful for an ad.
[00:26] Is this Veronica Mars’ middle school? All the kids have these ridiculous parental connectiosn that translate into power…
[00:27] Satsuki is pretty adorable in that uniform. But still badass.
[00:28] Once again I bemoan the fact that this show is not about her.
[00:28] That had absolutely nothing to do with the freaky BDSM shit that led into it.
[00:29] But I’m not complaining.
[00:29] Also, lol, Gamagori is a seven-year senior.
[00:29] He was totally just channeling that one move of Gurren Lagann’s where it sprouts a bazillion drills.
[00:32] Are you kidding me?
[00:32] Are we starting an effing TOURNEMENT ARC?
[00:33] Do they not know that Time to Tournement is the anime equivalent of gaming’s Time to Crate?
[00:34] Meh.
[00:34] That wasn’t BAD, but it definitely doesn’t bode well for the next few episodes at least.

[02:27] <Froborr> Okay, finally starting ep 7.
[02:28] <Froborr> Deep-fried assorted objects. Huh.
[02:28] <Froborr> Oh no, her quasi-adoptive pseudo-family is going to sexually harrass her, araen’t they?
[02:29] <Froborr> Yep.
[02:29] <Froborr> Because that’s funny, as opposed to absolutely freaking horrifying.
[02:29] <Froborr> Can Mako and her entire family please die in a fire, like, seven episodes ago?
[02:30] <Froborr> Knife. Throwing. Club. Wat.
[02:31] <Froborr> What is a Nanjing Lil–wait.
[02:31] <Froborr> No.
[02:32] <Froborr> Did they just make the RAPE OF NANKING into a weird joke?
[02:32] <Froborr> Fuck this show.
[02:33] <Froborr> …okay, starting a fight club is actually kinda clever, except of course it’ll never be approved.
[02:33] <Froborr> Oh, they’re addressing that.
[02:33] <Froborr> Satsuki continues to be 10,000x better than the show she’s stuck in.
[02:34] <Froborr> Yes, drown her n paperwork! This episode suddenly got much better.
[02:34] <Froborr> Wait, no, and then it turned shitty, because Mako is going to have a significant role.
[02:35] <Froborr> …was that mutant frog people club? I think my high school had one of those.
[02:35] <Froborr> Wait, no, I’m getting it confused with Sunnydale again.
[02:37] <Froborr> So, what happens to utterly destroy their new life?
[02:40] <Froborr> Ah, of course, it’s one of those episodes where trying to rise above your station leads to misery. Because stations are a thing people have.
[02:41] <Froborr> Okay, the dog living the high life made me chuckle.
[02:42] <Froborr> Ah, so Satsuki’s scheme is for their success to corrupt them.
[02:42] <Froborr> Boo on Ryuko missing the peeping, that’s bullshit.
[02:46] <Froborr> Yes yes, seeking power within a corrupt system inherently means accepting that corruption.
[02:47] <Froborr> Huh, I just realized I don’t hate Mako nearly as much in this fight sequence as I do normally.
[02:50] <Froborr> So, that episode was a thing that happened.
[02:51] <Froborr> And so Ryuko condemned a family to poverty so crushing they can’t even afford real meat. What a happy ending.
[02:52] <Froborr> Hmm, a plot development? Satsuki’s been using Ryuko, eh? No surprise there.

[02:52] <Froborr> Final thought: Nowhere near as bad as I feared. Around the middle of the road for this show. Still not impressed with the series.

[12:59] click
[13:00] I like this episode already
[13:00] Whoa!
[13:00] Mako has a spy network?
[13:00] Ah, he goes bishounen on her
[13:00] Wait, Mako… did something clever?
[13:00] It’s super effective!
[13:01] Why are his nipples glowing?
[13:01] So this is the episode where Glowing Pink Nipples first appear
[13:01] Those are here to stay
[13:01] Like I said, I like this episode already
[13:01] I love that organization name
[13:02] Bob’s Burgers flashbacks.  This can only be a good thing.
[13:04] Commercial break–60 seconds.
[13:04] It started right after the credits?
[13:04] Commercials?  Yup.
[13:05] And back.
[13:05] I wonder what the terrible dark secret of where life fibers come from is.
[13:05] I missed the call to pause. My bad, next time there’s an ad let me know when it is so I can reset to it.
[13:05] Given that they feed on human blood…
[13:06] Nudist silkworms.
[13:06] Shower scene, of course
[13:07] Ooh, flashback
[13:08] “Gang Leader Alliance Representative?”
[13:08] Dang, sassy drum majorette is sassy.
[13:08] Oh, there’s a monkey image there.
[13:09] Wow… blunt end, no less
[13:09] That looked paiful.
[13:09] Ah, he joined her party after she beat him
[13:09] So, will he join Matoi’s party after SHE beats him?
[13:10] Yes, obviously the cup’s handle is the deadliest part.
[13:10] Aww, she broke her favorite teacup?
[13:10] …Whoa
[13:11] There’s someone higher up than Satsuki? Is that what’s implied?
[13:11] btw this music is Ragyo’s leitmotif
[13:11] We’ve heard of her before
[13:11] Lance just found this awesome Dratini and he wants to battle!
[13:11] Yeah, in the episode where she took the uniform from the lab.
[13:11] Ah yes, forgot about that
[13:12] Okay, so the higher-up uniforms are straight-up mecha?
[13:12] Ooh, he used an illusion decoy?
[13:12] I never noticed the teeth on her skirt before, those are hilarious.
[13:12] Two can do that move
[13:13] So. That’s a dude who turns his Gaze on Ryuko to empower his stick.
[13:13] Ah, so THAT’s his weak spot
[13:14] Yeesh, this boss is tough
[13:14] AHAHAH
[13:14] After his Gaze is obstructed, Sageyama’s stick becomes limp and ineffectual.
[13:15] …yeah.
[13:15] The Freudian reading is explicit in the text.
[13:15] So, is he going to join Ryuko now?
[13:16] Ahahah…. “Iron” gets him high-graded
[13:17] Ragyo is Satsuki’s mother!
[13:17] Did we know that?
[13:17] He wants a rematch already?
[13:17] Life Fiber blindfold, I’m guessing?
[13:18] Ooh, Ryuko’s trying to psyche out Satsuki?
[13:18] …no, just a mark 2.
[13:19] You were on the right track, but you didn’t go far enough along it.
[13:19] Eww
[13:19] Ah, this is Phase 2 of the boss fight
[13:19] Where he loses his weak spot and you have to find another one
[13:20] Ah, he’s got Zatoichi powers now
[13:20] Yeah, gimmicky first phase, slugfest second phase.
[13:20] That Dragonite cannot possibly exist.
[13:20] Yikes… she’s lost some heavy HP there
[13:22] AHAHAH… he overloaded!
[13:22] Haaaaaaaaaaaaax
[13:22] It was one of those self-destroying bosses where you only have to outlast him
[13:22] Like the Lava Reef Zone boss, or the rematch with the Red Dragon in FFVI Advance
[13:23] “Behind?” He’s in front of her
[13:23] Wait, does she have a soft spot?
[13:23] Wow
[13:24] That was actually a really good episode!
[13:24] Yeah… a lot of symbolism
[13:24] There’s going to be a bunch like it
[13:24] But between that and this, a Mankanshoku family focus episode
[13:24] ~look forward to next week~
[13:24] Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
[13:24] Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
[13:25] Also, please refrain from posting spoilers like that in future?
[13:25] Will they get some actual character development, finally?
[13:25] Alright
[13:25] Hmm, judging from the preview, I’m almost optimistic
[13:26] Anyway, I like that in order to win, he had to sacrifice the ability to enjoy his prize.
[13:26] That’s a pretty darn good metaphor
[13:26] Yep.
[13:27] It wasn’t about the prize to begin with
[13:27] I know, but I still liked it.
[13:27] And I feel like this is the first episode where they’re *actually* satirizing fanservice and the male gaze, instead of that being an excuse to revel in it.
[13:27] The metaphor still works
[13:29] Last week, when FoME was calling Sanegayama “sword monkey” I didn’t remember that nickname was directly out of the show
[13:29] Also I am pretty sure I can now tell the difference between sword-monkey and bishie homeroom teach.
[13:30] Well, I must be off… got an early rehearsal today
[13:30] That paining of a monkey that briefly appeared in the flashback, I wonder if it’s a famous classical work?
[13:30] Next week, I think, I’ll be able to make it at the regular time
[13:31] G’day to y’all
[13:31] I wouldn’t know how to check, but I suspect it’s  a depiction of Wukong.
[13:32] If you could get a clear image of it, you could use Reverse Image Search.
[13:33] Anyway, looks like we’re dispersing, so, later all!
[13:34] Have a good afternoon

[14:00] <@Sylocat> Oops, scratch that… click
[14:00] <@Sylocat> Mad Max?
[14:00] <Froborr> I was about to ask, why is there a Fist of the North Star character here?
[14:00] <Arrlaari> I did not remember that guy has a name
[14:00] <FoME> Don’t worry. We’re beyond the Thunderdrome.
[14:01] <@Sylocat> I both like and dislike this guy already
[14:01] <@Sylocat> WHOA
[14:01] <@Sylocat> What is THAT?
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Oh yikes… you do NOT mess with these guys’ flower arrangements
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Piranha plants!
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Or the Pottsylvania Creeper
[14:02] <FoME> Yes, those are sewing machine guns.
[14:02] <@Sylocat> Wow! This boss got nerfed
[14:02] <Froborr> Interesting, so there’s someone else collecting XP thread.
[14:03] <@Sylocat> I didn’t know it was multiplayer
[14:04] <Froborr> As an aside, I’ve always wanted a superhero whose power is JRPG-style XP acquisition and leveling.
[14:04] <@Sylocat> So, Scott Pilgrim would join The Avengers?
[14:04] <FoME> Ad pause, please.
[14:04] <Froborr> NP
[14:05] <FoME> And that’s a rather frightening proposition.
[14:05] <@Sylocat> Yes, yes it is
[14:05] <Froborr> Indeed.
[14:05] <FoME> And we’re good.
[14:05] <@Sylocat> (though he becomes considerably less horrible by the end, which is the whole point)
[14:05] <@Sylocat> Whoa! We jump right into a hostage situation!
[14:05] <Froborr> Well, end of the comic. The movie botches his character development horribly.
[14:06] <@Sylocat> Oh my goodness, the Biology Club boss is a half-and-half!
[14:06] <FoME> I wish my school had a Mad Science Club.
[14:07] <@Sylocat> Oh yikes, her own outfit is fashion-policing her
[14:07] <Froborr> I’m reminded of that one QI episode with the running gag about “avoid fatty and spicy foods.”
[14:07] <Froborr> Is Mako dead?
[14:07] <@Sylocat> AHAHAHAH
[14:07] <Froborr> That’s probably too much to hope for, isn’t it.
[14:07] <@Sylocat> WHOA!
[14:07] <Arrlaari> Combat acupuncture
[14:07] <@Sylocat> They wouldn’t kill her off this early, it’s not GoT
[14:07] <@Sylocat> Ah, combat acupuncture!
[14:08] <FoME> Brace yourselves. Mohawks are coming.
[14:08] <@Sylocat> Is there an actual Pervert Club?
[14:08] <FoME> I wouldn’t be surprised.
[14:08] <Froborr> At this point, I suspect it’ll turn out to be the game’s Developer’s Room.
[14:09] <FoME> Ad pause, please.
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Gotcha
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Well… this has been an interesting level so far
[14:09] <Froborr> Okay, wait, we’ve seen teh guy in the bar before. He’s one of the three guys I can’t tell apart.
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Is he the teacher guy?
[14:09] <FoME> He’s the homeroom teacher/compulsive stripper/exposition guy.
[14:09] <Froborr> Wait, those ARE the same guy?
[14:10] <Arrlaari> yes
[14:10] <FoME> Yup.
[14:10] <@Sylocat> Ah yes, the Tutorial guy
[14:10] <FoME> Go.
[14:10] <Froborr> But they’re different from the one guy in Satsuki’s inner circle that looks just like them, yes?
[14:10] <FoME> Yup.
[14:10] <@Sylocat> The path that we of WHAT?!
[14:10] <Froborr> Okay, so the rebellion against the fashion-powered tyrants are called “Nudist Beach”? That’s kind of awesome.
[14:11] <@Sylocat> This just keeps on going
[14:11] <FoME> Darn cutscenes.
[14:11] <@Sylocat> This anime says “people and clothing aren’t enemies” and makes it sound deep
[14:11] <@Sylocat> Also it’s an anime where the term “naked Nudist” isn’t redundant
[14:12] <Froborr> I dunno about people, but clothing is definitely one of MY enemies.
[14:12] <Froborr> So she got fashion-policed and now she’s not eating. Is this a Very Special Episode?
[14:12] <@Sylocat> Is he naked?
[14:12] <Froborr> And now they’re looking at Mad Max’s Pokedex entry.
[14:13] <Froborr> There!
[14:13] <Froborr> That guy in the foreground!
[14:13] <Froborr> Is he the same person as the Exposition Guy?
[14:13] <FoME> Nope.
[14:13] <@Sylocat> At some point, we’ve got to establish how to tell them apart
[14:14] <Arrlaari> The Elite Four exposition guy is not the Nudist Beach exposition guy
[14:14] <FoME> Ad break, please.
[14:14] <Arrlaari> Elite Four exposition is younger and always wears a jacket that covers the lower half of his face
[14:14] <Froborr> No, not him, the other guy.
[14:14] <Froborr> With the spikier blue hair.
[14:14] <@Sylocat> Ah, so THAT’s how you tell them apart
[14:14] <Arrlaari> The butler?
[14:14] <FoME> Sword Monkey?
[14:14] <Arrlaari> Sword Monkey doesn’t have blue hair
[14:14] <@Sylocat> Which of the Elite Four does?
[14:15] <Arrlaari> The info guy
[14:15] <FoME> Go.
[14:15] <@Sylocat> The train moves, not the station
[14:16] <@Sylocat> And he’s back
[14:16] <@Sylocat> I hope she’s been level grinding…
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Uh oh, she’s out of the groove
[14:16] <FoME> Judging by her nerves, she hasn’t.
[14:16] <Froborr> So why DID he let her transform?
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Vibranium?
[14:17] <FoME> Too far away to stop it?
[14:17] <@Sylocat> What the heck?
[14:17] <@Sylocat> AHAHAH
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Oh, they’re all temporarily joining her party because they’re mad at this guy
[14:18] <@Sylocat> Ahah, unrest amongst the Elite Four
[14:18] <FoME> And spool grenades.
[14:18] <@Sylocat> The heck…
[14:19] <Froborr> Okay, I’ll admit, this sequence with the band and all the quick shots of the battle is pretty funny.
[14:19] <@Sylocat> In-universe background music!
[14:20] <@Sylocat> “Betrayed by clothing.”
[14:20] <@Sylocat> This show is just too awesome
[14:20] <Froborr> Killed in the pursuit of experimental fashion.
[14:20] <@Sylocat> Nooooo! Senketsu!
[14:21] <@Sylocat> Mako?!
[14:21] <FoME> Yup.
[14:21] <@Sylocat> Wha… she’s got Pinkie Powers!
[14:21] <FoME> She’s one of two Pinkies in this show.
[14:22] <FoME> We haven’t seen the other yet.
[14:22] <@Sylocat> Her only friends were in her head. Gee, I wonder why…
[14:22] <@Sylocat> Why does Mako have a nosebleed? I missed it
[14:22] <@Sylocat> AHAHAH
[14:22] <Arrlaari> Also note that Mako has a small nose bleed
[14:22] <Arrlaari> yeah
[14:22] <FoME> She did fall face-first.
[14:23] <@Sylocat> He’s fazed by talking clothing? Does he think he’s in a different anime?
[14:23] <FoME> Normally only Ryuko can hear Senketsu.
[14:23] <FoME> Normally.
[14:23] <@Sylocat> I love how the bad guys are helping her out for purely selfish reasons
[14:24] <Froborr> Okay, I like the drum majorette Elite Four.
[14:24] <@Sylocat> “Anti-Uniform Guerilla”
[14:24] <@Sylocat> Is Jakuzure the Elite Four drummer girl?
[14:24] <FoME> Yup.
[14:24] <@Sylocat> Thought so
[14:25] <@Sylocat> D’awwwww
[14:25] <FoME> My Little Kamui: Life Fibers are Magic
[14:25] <Froborr> “Coming apart at the seams”
[14:25] <Froborr> Get it?
[14:25] <Froborr> Because CLOTHING
[14:25] <@Sylocat> Was that a deliberate pun?
[14:26] <@Sylocat> Or just a subtitle thing?
[14:26] <Arrlaari> Well, the subtitlers did it on purpose
[14:26] <@Sylocat> I love the closingsong
[14:26] <FoME> The little nubs along Ryuko’s iris always fascinate me.
[14:26] <Arrlaari> I think we still haven’t cleared up who Froborr was talking about, the guy with the “spikier blue hair”
[14:26] <FoME> It’s like her eyes are little gears.
[14:27] <Froborr> That guy!
[14:27] <Froborr> The one prominent in the next episode preview!
[14:27] <FoME> Yeah, that’s… well, I think you got his name.
[14:27] <Arrlaari> His hair isn’t blue though
[14:28] <Froborr> What color is it? It looks blue to me.
[14:28] <FoME> It’s more an ocean green.
[14:28] <Froborr> …but… oceans ARE blue… :/
[14:29] <FoME> Ostensibly.
[14:29] <FoME> But yeah, it’s definitely the bluer end of green.
[14:29] <Arrlaari> Okay, I’m back at that scene, and the lighting did turn his hair blue
[14:29] <Froborr> And I don’t think we’ve ever seen him outside that room, so.
[14:30] <@Sylocat> Well, I should get going… I’m rehearsing one play, and teching a performance of another
[14:30] <Arrlaari> He was outside in the first couple episodes
[14:30] <Froborr> Ah.
[14:30] <FoME> Bye, Sylo.
[14:30] <Arrlaari> He’s the athletic club chairman, so he was boxing club guy’s boss
[14:30] <Froborr> Bye, Sylo.
[14:30] <@Sylocat> Looking forward to the EqG post, even though I loved the movie and you didn’t
[14:30] <FoME> And Tennis Girl’s.
[14:30] <@Sylocat> See ya round… this was fun
[14:30] <Froborr> Yeah, my ability to remember past events in this show is limited. Everything is so frenetic that little stands out enough to register.
[14:30] <Froborr> And yep!
[14:30] == Sylocat [b83c1916@gateway/web/freenode/ip.184.60.25.22] has quit [Quit: Page closed]
[14:31] <Froborr> See you all next week!
[14:31] <FoME> What did you think of this one?
[14:31] <Arrlaari> tbh, I remember the first two episodes I did a lot of stop-and-rewind
[14:32] <Froborr> I liked it better than 1, 2, or 4. Not as much as 3.
[14:33] <Froborr> I could follow what was going on, there was little of the annoying “ostensibly funny thing happens, followed immediately by character screaming that said ostensibly funny thing happened,” and I like the design and attitude of the drum majoriette.
[14:34] <Froborr> Anyone have any thoughts before I copypasta?

[14:34] <FoME> Not really. Glad you liked this one.

[14:35] <Froborr> Okay, copypastaing.
[14:35] <Arrlaari> I look forward to seeing you respond to Sanageyama’s focus episode
[14:35] <Froborr> What’s a Sanageyama?
[14:35] <Arrlaari> He’s the dude you were asking about earlier
[14:35] <Froborr> Ah.
[14:36] <FoME> I call him Sword Monkey.
[14:36] <Arrlaari> Uzu Sanageyama, athletic club chairman and kendo club guy

[14:01] <Froborr> …Have I mentioned I really dislike Mako’s family?
[14:01] <Froborr> Also, who does laundry at 4 am?
[14:01] <Froborr> Other than me, I mean.
[14:01] <FoME> Mako’s mother, apparently.
[14:01] <FoME> The woman may or may not sleep.
[14:02] <Froborr> This reminds me of my favorite Spider-Man storyline.
[14:02] <FoME> Well, we’re at the theme song. Do tell.
[14:03] <Froborr> It’s an early one, Spider-Man’s existence has only just become common knowledge.
[14:03] <Froborr> And in the previous storyline, one of his classmates dressed as Spider-Man for a costume party and got kidnapped by Doctor Doom.
[14:03] <Arrlaari> Crunchyroll marks ads on the timeline, so it looks like one will start at the end of the credits
[14:03] <Froborr> Okay, I’ll pause there.
[14:04] <FoME> And we have ad.
[14:04] <Froborr> Aunt May was therefore VERY WORRIED when she found a costume in Peter’s room, and confiscated it.
[14:04] <Froborr> So he had to buy a back-up from a costume store, adn it didn’t fit properly, so he had to web the mask in place.
[14:04] <Arrlaari> Ad started shortly after credit song
[14:05] <Arrlaari> ad ended
[14:05] <FoME> And we’re back.
[14:05] <Froborr> Two issues later, Doc Ock has him unconscious and tries to unmask him…
[14:05] == Sylocat [b83c1916@gateway/web/freenode/ip.184.60.25.22] has joined ##rabbitcube
[14:05] <FoME> Hi Sylo.
[14:05] <Froborr> And can’t because the webbing.
[14:05] <Sylocat> Crud! Sorry I’m late
[14:05] <Froborr> Np, we only just passed the credits.
[14:05] <Sylocat> Alright, I’ll try and fast-forward
[14:06] <Froborr> Okay, so WHY do they have to do an obstacle course or else get expelled?
[14:06] <FoME> Because.
[14:06] <Froborr> Is there a motive for this?
[14:06] <Sylocat> It’s probably a metaphor for… something
[14:06] <Arrlaari> One girl in the whole crowd is super into Gamagoori sleeping in the nude
[14:06] <FoME> The same motive where stealing a uniform gets you hung from the neck until dead.
[14:06] <Froborr> Yep, I noticed that. It amused me.
[14:06] <Arrlaari> The whole school is about over the top social darwinism
[14:07] <Froborr> So, just the underlying sadism of the authoritarian mindset?
[14:07] <Froborr> So this is the “Ryuko proves she’s still a badass without her super-suit” episode, yes?
[14:07] <FoME> Yup. Remember, “fashion” and “fascism” are very nearly homophones in Japanese.
[14:08] <Sylocat> AHAHAHAH… oh yikes
[14:08] <FoME> “Go on without me.” “Okay.”
[14:08] <Sylocat> Awww
[14:09] <Arrlaari> Ad imminent
[14:09] <Froborr> I am immensely suspicious of broken-arm girl.
[14:09] <Arrlaari> Ad begun
[14:09] <FoME> “Did I mention I’m not a villain?”
[14:09] <Froborr> Paused.
[14:09] <Arrlaari> Ad ended.
[14:10] <Arrlaari> Crunchyroll can’t seem to sell ads so every ad is two runs of the same 14 second ad for Crunchyroll’s subscription service.
[14:10] <Sylocat> Of course
[14:10] <Froborr> I see Mako’s dad learned to drive from watching Lupin III.
[14:11] <Sylocat> Dang, this level is pretty tough for so early in the game
[14:11] <Froborr> Well, she IS doing the no-Senketsu challenge.
[14:12] <Sylocat> “Vile hellhound?”
[14:12] <FoME> Massive bragging rights for that one.
[14:12] <Arrlaari> “Both school and their homes”
[14:13] <Sylocat> So hijack it
[14:13] <Froborr> I’m starting to think this school is a metaphor for something, just possibly perhaps a little bit maybe.
[14:13] <Sylocat> She sounds so cheerful
[14:14] <Arrlaari> ad started
[14:14] <Arrlaari> I was about two seconds late on that
[14:14] <Arrlaari> ad ended
[14:15] <Sylocat> Ooh, Mako gets to command a gun turret! I love those minigames!
[14:15] <Arrlaari> I like how the translators used “totes” there
[14:15] <Froborr> Yeah, that fits well with Mako’s character.
[14:15] <Sylocat> Oh no… the Blue Danube!
[14:15] <Froborr> Oh hey, they found the Rocket Jump cheat!
[14:15] <Arrlaari> This episode is like Looney Tunes
[14:15] <Sylocat> It’s the Red Green movie all over again
[14:15] <Arrlaari> Down to the use of public domain classical music
[14:15] <Froborr> Hard to pull off with a vehicle.
[14:16] <Sylocat> And now she gets stripped again
[14:16] <Sylocat> Eeyup
[14:16] <Sylocat> Of course
[14:17] <FoME> Guts fainted! Use next Pokémon?
[14:17] <Froborr> Yep.
[14:17] <Sylocat> Ooh, she wants it for herself, not for Satsuki?
[14:18] <Sylocat> This is getting complex
[14:18] <Froborr> I will admit, I did not see her wanting it for herself coming.
[14:18] <Sylocat> Whoa, she clipped right through her uniform!
[14:19] <Sylocat> This game has wonky collision detection
[14:19] <FoME> Unequip one armor, equip the other.
[14:19] <Sylocat> “Strepower?”
[14:19] <Sylocat> Is that supposed to be “Stripower?”
[14:19] <FoME> I think it’s a portmanteau.
[14:20] <Arrlaari> If you listen, she was saying chikara and powa (power) so they went with strength and power
[14:20] <Sylocat> Ahh, I see
[14:20] <Sylocat> AHAHAH
[14:20] <Sylocat> Oh yikes, Senketsu has taste in blood?
[14:20] <FoME> Still a better vampire romance than… yeah, that joke’s overdone.
[14:20] <Sylocat> Whoa!
[14:20] <Arrlaari> Looney tunes
[14:21] <Froborr> lol, they Wile E. Coyote’d them.
[14:21] <Sylocat> Trompe L’oiel
[14:21] <Froborr> That is the first time this show was actually funny.
[14:21] <Sylocat> A suicide screwover?
[14:21] <FoME> Nope.
[14:22] <Sylocat> Well, I knew she wasn’t going to die, but I thought she’d survive by accident
[14:23] <Sylocat> Ooh, ski lift!
[14:23] <Sylocat> Oops, she’s in trouble
[14:24] <Sylocat> Dang, he don’t give a fuck
[14:24] <FoME> Buhler?
[14:24] <Froborr> *sighs*
[14:25] <Froborr> That was… eh.
[14:25] <FoME> This is basically the one filler episode in the series.
[14:25] <Froborr> I guess it was a comedy episode? But it was just trying so hard. You could *see* them straining desperately to wring every drop of wackiness out of the premise.
[14:26] <Sylocat> The preview guy talks like Jaqen H’ghar
[14:26] <Arrlaari> That was a very popular episode, and I like it alot myself. The 3x repeated gag is bothersome, but the rest of it I am 100% down for
[14:26] <Froborr> Heh, I cut it off before the preview.
[14:27] <FoME> Likewise. Whoops.
[14:27] <Sylocat> (I can’t believe I spelled his name right without having to Google it)
[14:27] <Froborr> Well, let’s talk about that then–what is it you like about it? Do you find it funny? Exciting?
[14:27] <Froborr> Because I spent it basically bored, and I’m curious what I missed.
[14:27] <Sylocat> Eh, I like it as a send-up of anime tropes and teen culture in general
[14:28] <FoME> I admit, I’m easily entertained by wacky antics.
[14:28] <Arrlaari> Well basically I am down for something that is willing to commit that completely to the premise
[14:28] <Sylocat> Plus, the battle scenes in this one were kickass
[14:29] <Arrlaari> It’s kind of worrying that you don’t like Mako’s family because they are exemplary of this show’s aesthetic
[14:29] <FoME> Which is to say, endearingly insane.
[14:29] <Sylocat> I dunno… I also find Mako’s family kinda tedious, but I like the rest of it
[14:29] <Arrlaari> I don’t follow the fandom at large super closely but my impression is that Mako is in competition with Satsuki for the title of most popular character
[14:30] <Sylocat> No competition for me, Satsuki is awesome
[14:30] <Froborr> I find them very annoying, one-note characters whose only note is “Hey! HEY! LOOK AT MY ONE NOTE!”
[14:30] <Froborr> Satsuki *is* pretty cool so far.
[14:30] <FoME> Princess Eyebrows is pretty awesome, yes.
[14:31] <Sylocat> The whole thing reminds me of Scott Pilgrim, a little
[14:31] <Arrlaari> Well, if you’re willing to put up with a lot more Mako in order to get a lot more Satsuki, you’re going to get both
[14:31] <Froborr> Film or comic?
[14:31] <Sylocat> A little of both
[14:32] <Sylocat> Film, mostly, though…
[14:32] <Froborr> I don’t really see it.
[14:32] <Froborr> The film was a musical with the musical numbers replaced by equally OTT fight sequences.
[14:32] <Arrlaari> Out of curiosity, who here has seen Gurenn Lagan?
[14:32] <Sylocat> The way it contextualizes youth drama as video game clichés
[14:32] <Froborr> This, on the other hand, is NOTHING BUT OTT fight sequences.
[14:33] <Froborr> Oh, okay, yeah, I can sort of see that… except so far I haven’t detected any actual youth drama.
[14:33] <Sylocat> The high school pecking order, fashion angst, &c.
[14:33] <Froborr> I have seen Gurren Lagann, I freakin’ loved it.
[14:34] <FoME> I like to think of Kill La Kill as TTGL’s distaff counterpart.
[14:34] <Arrlaari> That’s also the impression I have
[14:34] <Sylocat> Yeah, Gurren Lagaan is awesome
[14:34] <Arrlaari> It’s not a sequel but it feels to me like it’s “more like that”
[14:35] <Froborr> I think the problem I have is, again, the lack of dynamics.
[14:36] <Froborr> You know pop music gets autotuned to be at max volume all the time so there is no variation in it whatsoever, and it sounds and feels incredibly artificial and flat?
[14:36] <Froborr> This feels like someone autotuned Gurren Lagann.
[14:36] <Sylocat> To each their own, I suppose
[14:37] <Froborr> Yeah.
[14:37] <Froborr> I liked the previous episode! It had characters in it.
[14:37] <Froborr> I want more like that.
[14:37] <FoME> You’ll get them.
[14:37] <Sylocat> I guess we’ll see
[14:38] <FoME> At least, I think you’ll get them. I call myself FanOfMostEverything for a reason. I’m not exactly an unbiased source.
[14:38] <Froborr> I’m sorry. I’m trying not to be Mr. Crankypants Hatesfun, but thus far this show is mostly not working for me.
[14:38] <Arrlaari> One of the elements of this show’s style is throwing stuff at you and just letting them be there without explanation, then much later explaining them
[14:39] <Arrlaari> I feel like you’re going to like the latter parts of this show a lot more than the early parts
[14:39] <Froborr> I’m okay with that style. I mean, I’m a huge Utena fan, and that doesn’t even *start* explaining what’s going on until episode 34 of 39.
[14:40] <Sylocat> I can understand that… I probably wouldn’t like it either, if I wasn’t such a sucker for this kind of thing
[14:41] <Froborr> For me it’s not so much that it’s not explained as that I just haven’t been given a reason to care about Ryuko or Mako or Mako’s family. Thus far there is no hint that they are anything other than shouty blobs of digital paint.
[14:42] <Froborr> But it *did* have at least one episode I enjoyed in the first three, and that means I watch the season.
[14:42] <Froborr> That is The Rules.
[14:43] <Froborr> And I do hope you’re right that I enjoy the later parts more–I probably will, if you’re correct that there’s more Satsuki in them.
[14:43] <FoME> Much more.
[14:43] <Arrlaari> The Elite Four might also win you over
[14:44] <Froborr> I dunno, that Lance bastard cheats like anything.
[14:44] <Froborr> His Dragonite literally cannot exist!
[14:45] <Arrlaari> I was going to ask which one you were nicknaming Lance and then I remembered he’s in the elite four of the one Pokemon game I played
[14:45] <FoME> Sadly, “Puff of Logic” wasn’t added until Ruby/Sapphire.
[14:45] <Froborr> lol
[14:46] <Froborr> I am actually endlessly amused that he’s the main villain of the Yellow arc of Pokemon Special. Because he’s such a damn, dirty cheater in the game.
[14:46] <Arrlaari> Well, I guess he was in the two pokemon games I played, since I got both blue and red
[14:46] <Arrlaari> I did that so I could Catch Them All. The reason I didn’t get any of the sequels is because they added hundreds of new pokemon and didn’t remove any of the previous pokemon and that is just too many pokemon
[14:47] <Arrlaari> I can’t catch all that
[14:47] <Froborr> Yeah, I have never successfully Caught Them All.
[14:47] <FoME> Despite the imperative, neither have I.
[14:47] <Arrlaari> I completed the pokedexes in Blue and Red. It involved a lot of trading and then immediately trading back
[14:47] <Arrlaari> And after that I was Done With Pokemon
[14:48] <Froborr> I gave up on Pokemon after Black and White, the Revolutionary New Games That Changed Everything!! …and were exactly the same game as I’d been buying for 15+ years.
[14:48] <Froborr> Anyway, any final thoguhts on Kill la Kill before I copypasta the chat over to the blog?
[14:48] <Arrlaari> To be honest, I feel like new games shouldn’t have old names
[14:48] <FoME> Nintendo! If it ain’t broke, don’t do anything that might fix it.
[14:49] <Arrlaari> Next episode is going to be Uncomfortable
[14:49] <Froborr> Be fair: Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and Metroid Prime were all spectacularly revolutionary for their franchises.
[14:49] <FoME> All true, and I loved all of them.
[14:50] <FoME> And yes, next episode may actually make you feel something for Ryuko.
[14:50] <Froborr> Good, the show DESPERATELY NEEDS that.
[14:51] <Sylocat> Sorry, I was AFK
[14:51] <Sylocat> I always liked Lance, I don’t know why
[14:51] <Froborr> I mean, I don’t need something pointlessly tragic happening to her. It could be something that makes her happy! Or angry! Or anything!
[14:51] <Froborr> Just something that gives me some hint that she has a personality.
[14:52] <Arrlaari> That’s not the kind of Uncomfortable I was talking about. I can see what FoME is talking about but I feel he’s being optimistic.

[14:53] <Froborr> Well, we’ll see.

[14:53] <Froborr> I’m’a copypasta this now.
