About Me

Jen A. Blue is an author, blogger, and media commentator specializing in the analysis of U.S. and Japanese animation of the Long 1990s (a period stretching from roughly 1987 to 2005) through today, though she has been known to write the occasional movie or book review as well. She also occasionally writes original fiction, mostly falling broadly into the science fiction and fantasy genres, as well as the rare spot of fanfiction. This site is intended to function both as a personal blog and a gateway to all of her writing, both fiction and non-fiction. She is spectacularly good at all of this, and you can rest assured that this is absolutely true because she wrote this herself and her reputation for rigorous honesty is ironclad.

  1. Hey Jed,

I just wanted to say I really enjoyed your panel on Gainax mecha series. Your explanation for Evangelion clarified a lot of things for me and suddenly the show makes a lot more sense. If you’re ever up for it, I think an explanation of exactly what is going on and where all that imagery is coming from in the style of a CGP Grey video would be pretty amazing. Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKU0qDpu3AM

Hope to see you again next year!

  3. Hi Jen,

I just read your book on Madoka and was floored by how amazing it was. Thank you for writing it! I wrote a piece on Madoka myself a few years ago; if I had known of your book at the time I wrote it I would’ve engaged some of your interpretations in developing my own. Here’s a link, in case you’re interested:

    best wishes!

    • My apologies for not replying earlier. I have been inundated with spam comments in recent weeks, and only just today got the site’s spam blocker working properly. Your comment was one of the few good ones buried in the avalanche of ads for sketchy services and word-salad linkfests.

I took a brief look at your piece, but quickly realized my lunch break was not enough time to give it the attention it deserves. I’ve flagged it to check out soon, however!

  4. Hi Jen! Missed you and your insights at Anime Boston this year. Hope you’re doing okay, and that something this season sparks curiosity. As a side note, I’ve been using The Very Soil and Animated Discussions to help teach some friends about engage more actively with, and how to use critical lenses and interpretations to get more out of, their media–and boy did it pay off this AB!

    • Wow! That’s awesome about your friends, thank you!

As for AB this year… AB has gotten so expensive for me that I cannot afford it unless they (at minimum) comp my hotel room. Last year they did–the arrangement was that four of us had to collectively provide 28 hours of content, and in exchange we shared a room. This year, AB waited until AFTER panel submissions were closed to respond to queries about whether we were doing the same thing, and even though they answered “yes,” by that time I had already made plans and bought plane tickets to spend Passover with my family.

      Ah well. Maybe next year.
