[13:10] <Sylocat> Hahah… I think we can all relate to that one
[13:10] <Froborr> “Getting presents always cheers me up. And/or turns me into a giant monster.”
[13:11] <Sylocat> Yep, it’s another babysitting episode, only this time it’s the one with the exact opposite problem from Pinkie
[13:11] <Arrlaari> So did anyone else notice that the parents look not good
[13:12] <Sylocat> They look even worse than in the S6 premiere
[13:12] <Froborr> Yeah. Reminds me of my coworker. He’s got a one-year-old, and at least a couple times a month I find him completely passed out from exhaustion in his cubicle.
[13:12] <Froborr> Parenting is a terrifying nightmare.
[13:13] <Sylocat> Indeed
[13:14] <Sylocat> “Whammy.” I wonder what he thinks of this episode
[13:15] <Froborr> Really hope this isn’t a rehash of that one Pinky episode.
[13:15] <Froborr> It was a good episode, but there’s no need to do it twice.
[13:16] <Sylocat> I think there’s an interesting contrast between the difficulties Twilight and Pinkie would encounter
[13:16] <Froborr> True.
[13:17] <Sylocat> I like this guy already
[13:17] <Arrlaari> “A thousand nights in a hallway”
[13:17] <Arrlaari> ‘cos he was a guard
[13:18] <Froborr> Hahaha, I love the painting.
[13:19] <Froborr> And how quickly it takes Shining Armor from “is this even art” to being spoken to by it.
[13:19] <Sylocat> Eeyup… shared history there
[13:20] <Sylocat> I love how the “But they were organized completely differently” only adds like 10 seconds to the delay because Twilight
[13:21] <Sylocat> The fanfic writers are gonna have a field day with “Alien Alicorns vs. Space Pirates.”
[13:22] <Froborr> “Art is so evocative! Score!”
[13:22] <Froborr> I’m kinda loving Sensitive Bro Artist.
[13:22] <Arrlaari> “I wasn’t even going for that memory … SCORE”
[13:23] <Sylocat> Yeah, I love the trope of “macho-dudebro-coded guy is a refined and sensitive artist”
[13:23] <Froborr> Okay, that was jarring. The company I work for is called BAE.
[13:23] <Sylocat> Really?
[13:23] <Froborr> Yeah. Well, they sign my paychecks–I’m on permanent assignment as a contractor in a gov’t office.
[13:24] <Sylocat> baby fight
[13:24] <Froborr> Aww, she was trying to help.
[13:25] <Sylocat> You’d think Twilight would know better by now than to say “It can’t possibly get any worse.”
[13:25] <Arrlaari> Next: the baby contracts these hives
[13:26] <Froborr> Yep. And gives them to Twilight and the parents.
[13:26] <Sylocat> Unless they cast that same spell Twilight and Cadence used to avoid Discord’s flu
[13:27] <Sylocat> baby is OP, nerf plz
[13:28] <Sylocat> I was expecting the sick foals to be like, “That was AWESOME! Let’s do it again!”
[13:30] <Froborr> Artbro is bestbro.
[13:30] <Sylocat> “It totally speaks to me, duuuuuude.” I love it.
[13:30] <Sylocat> (not an exact quote but still)
[13:32] <Froborr> That was a fun, cute episode, definitely better than its premise led me to expect.
[13:32] <Froborr> Mostly because artbro.
[13:32] <Sylocat> Yeah, a whole lot of great little details here
[13:33] <Froborr> I also like that Twilight quickly accepted that since she’s the one with agency here, things going wrong is her fault, not the baby’s.
[13:34] <Froborr> “responsibility” may be a better word than “fault” here.
[13:34] <Sylocat> Yeah… of course, accepting responsibility for everything in the world is one of Twilight’s main things
[13:35] <Froborr> True.

[13:39] <Sylocat> From the title, guess who’s here
[13:40] <Froborr> “Rocktorate.”
[13:40] <Sylocat> …Did he say “Rocktorate?”
[13:40] <Froborr> MAUD
[13:40] <Sylocat> I love this episode already
[13:40] <Froborr> ALL HAIL MAUD
[13:41] <Sylocat> Would the abbreviation of “Rocktor” be “Rr.”?
[13:41] <Froborr> Pinky is right. Truly a pronouncement for the ages.
[13:41] <Sylocat> Indeed
[13:41] <Froborr> Man, first artbro, now Maud? This is an excellent pair of episodes for guest stars
[13:41] <Froborr> WHAT
[13:42] <Froborr> MOVING TO PONYVILLE
[13:42] <Sylocat> This is too good to be true, something’s going to go horribly wrong
[13:42] <Froborr> Nooooooooo
[13:42] <Froborr> You can’t tease me like this show!
[13:42] <Froborr> “You should do standup!” “I do.”
[13:43] <Sylocat> Was that a reference to the Smooze episode?
[13:43] <Sylocat> A whole lotta callbacks here
[13:44] <Sylocat> Maud is the best at everything
[13:44] <Sylocat> EV.ERY.THING.
[13:45] <Froborr> I was about to say, aren’t most castles made of rock?
[13:45] <Sylocat> …Tank?
[13:45] <Froborr> I don’t think I’ve seen a lot of wooden or brick castles.
[13:45] <Froborr> TANK
[13:46] <Sylocat> We haven’t seen him since season 4!
[13:46] <Sylocat> (or was it 5? The episode that was a metaphor for coping with the loss of a pet)
[13:47] <Froborr> “Maudelina Daisy Pie”
[13:47] <Froborr> Also, it was s5.
[13:47] <Sylocat> Please tell me Maud will join up with Starlight’s adventuring party like Trixie and Discord
[13:47] <Froborr> So, Starlight.
[13:47] <Froborr> Starlight.
[13:48] <Sylocat> Whoa
[13:48] <Sylocat> AHAHAHAAHAHA
[13:48] <Froborr> lol
[13:48] <Sylocat> Oh, that was one of the best plot reveals in the show!
[13:48] <Froborr> Pinkie’s reaction!
[13:49] <Froborr> This is amazing. Possibly even better than the first Maud ep.
[13:49] <Sylocat> “Am I?”
[13:50] <Sylocat> How about slam poetry?
[13:50] <Froborr> D’aawwwww.
[13:51] <Sylocat> Oh, Pinkie…
[13:52] <Sylocat> Wait, Starlight and Maud are bonding over finding Pinkie exasperating?
[13:52] <Froborr> 2,000 is… pretty young for a rock.
[13:52] <Sylocat> …WAT
[13:52] <Froborr> Also Starlight’s last comment crossed over the ship line.
[13:53] <Sylocat> Uh…
[13:53] <Sylocat> How did that get there?
[13:53] <Froborr> “Beautiful and strong but doesn’t judge you or make you feel less than in any way.” She’s talking about Maud. I ship it now.
[13:53] <Sylocat> Reminds me of the Trixie/Maud fan comic
[13:53] <Froborr> OMG LOLOLOL
[13:54] <Froborr> “Boulder, get us out of here.” BOOM.
[13:54] <Froborr> I am having way too much fun with this episode.
[13:54] <Froborr> Also: jalapeno red velvet cupcakes sound like something my brother would like.
[13:54] <Sylocat> I have a new OT3: Starlight, Maud, and Trixie
[13:55] <Froborr> Counterproposal: Starlight, Maud, and artbro.
[13:56] <Sylocat> Can’t Pinkie just teleport onto the train? Or does it only work when it’s funny?
[13:56] <Froborr> Yeah, Pinkie Pie’s powers work on the same principles as Roger Rabbit’s.
[13:57] <Sylocat> Starlight’s talent at breaking bad news gently rivals mine
[13:58] <Froborr> Oh hey, this is the place where the race was!
[13:58] <Froborr> From the episode that introduced Tank.
[13:58] <Sylocat> Maud’s talent at not giving a buck is nonpareil
[13:59] <Sylocat> AHAHAHH
[13:59] <Froborr> I love that her “fire” is little red crystals.
[14:00] <Sylocat> I am going to use that line
[14:00] <Froborr> YES
[14:00] <Sylocat> YAY!
[14:00] <Sylocat> YESSSSS!
[14:00] <Sylocat> Maud made her home here!
[14:01] <Sylocat> That was SO GOOD!
[14:01] <Froborr> Easily best episode of the season so far.
[14:02] <Sylocat> I want Maud and Artbro to join Starlight’s adventuring party for their next battle with Chrysalis
[14:02] <Froborr> So very much.
[14:03] <Sylocat> And I love the underground paradise-cavern thingy
[14:04] <Froborr> Same.
[14:05] <Sylocat> And the return of Tank. I’d assumed they were just quietly going to treat his last episode as his “death.”
[14:05] <Arrlaari> What happened in his last episode?
[14:05] <Sylocat> He went into hibernation, and Rainbow Dash got torn up over it and tried to stop winter from coming
[14:06] <Arrlaari> Ok yeah, I can see how that could be code for “he was dying and Dash freaked out”
[14:06] <Sylocat> The moral was about accepting the cycle of life (hence why we figured it was covertly about dealing with the loss of a pet)
[14:06] <Froborr> But no, they had to bring him back in order to cement that he WAS coming back.
[14:07] <Sylocat> (or maybe dad and I read it that way because dad had recently lost a cat when it aired)
[14:07] <Froborr> No, I read it exactly the same way.
[14:07] <Froborr> But that’s WHY they had to bring him back, to mollify parents.
[14:07] <Froborr> Parents are easily upset by things like characters dying.
[14:07] <Sylocat> Good point
[14:09] <Sylocat> …Anyway… wow. I gotta get to rehearsal, but… wow. That was great
[14:09] <Froborr> Yeah, wonderful ep.
[14:10] <Sylocat> I hope we see more of Artbro, and I’m overjoyed we get Maud as one of Starlight’s forming Mane Six
[14:10] <Sylocat> see y’all soon
[14:10] <Froborr> I’m trying to think of a pony pun for Secondary Six.
[14:10] <Froborr> Later!
[14:11] <Arrlaari> So, we’re 2 MLP a week until we catch up?
[14:11] <Froborr> Yep, and then we’ll do 1 MLP/1 Dragon Maid.
[14:11] <Arrlaari> also, last week I was absent without notice because I’d been up late so I was still in bed
[14:12] <Froborr> Fair.
[14:12] <Arrlaari> trying to sleep because I needed it but failing because it was too hot
[14:12] <Froborr> Yeah, I’ve had nights like that.
[14:13] <Arrlaari> That wasn’t at night, that was in the morning after my alarm went off. I was up late because I was doing something on my computer instead of getting ready for bed
[14:13] <Froborr> Ah. Still, it happens.
[14:13] <Froborr> I’ve had plenty of nights like that, too.
[14:16] <Arrlaari> It’s been long enough that I can’t remember the conversation we had after the last season finale
[14:16] <Arrlaari> I think we were talking about matching up Starlight’s crew with the Mane Six?
[14:16] <Froborr> Quite possibly. Definitely something I was thinking about today.
[14:20] <Arrlaari> I looked it up
[14:21] <Arrlaari> Sylo asked if there was going to be a reformed villains mane six
[14:21] <Arrlaari> So the discussion was constrained to reformed antagonists, which Maud Pie is definitely not
[14:22] <Froborr> Ah. Indeed she is not.
[14:23] <Froborr> Still an excellent fit for the team. More or less the Applejack equivalent.
[14:23] <Arrlaari> Here’s the list you proposed:  Starlight->Twilight, Trixie->Rarity, Thorax->Fluttershy, Discord->Pinkie, Gilda->RD, Flim/Flam->AJ.
[14:23] <Froborr> Were all of them in that episode? I don’t remember.
[14:24] <Arrlaari> No
[14:24] <Arrlaari> Because there were only 4 on the team, we were discussing who could fill out the two remaining spots
[14:24] <Arrlaari> For example, a Pony who was a reckless flyer in a Rainbow Dash focused episode was proposed for Gilda’s spot
[14:25] <Froborr> Oh yeah, the Season 3 RD meets Season 1 RD episode.
[14:25] <Arrlaari> Anyway, if we count Maud now we have 5 definite spots and only one more to make a full set
[14:26] <Froborr> The remaining one being RD?
[14:26] <Arrlaari> Right
[14:27] <Arrlaari> If we go by Elements of Harmony I think Maud is pretty honest
[14:28] <Froborr> I was thinking more that she’s got strong ties to earth even for an Earth pony (like Applejack), tremendously strong (like Applejack), generally calmer than the others (like Applejack)
[14:28] <Froborr> But yes, the honesty thing too, now that you mention it.
[14:29] <Arrlaari> Rainbow Dash’s element was courage, right?
[14:30] <Froborr> No, loyalty.
[14:31] <Arrlaari> I had a doubt
[14:33] <Arrlaari> So, Griffonstone was in some ways about loyalty in that the community was collapsing because everyone in it was trying to save enough money to leave
[14:34] <Arrlaari> rather than solve the problems which they believed were unsolvable so long as their literal golden idol was gone
[14:34] <Arrlaari> but that’s kind of a strech
[14:34] <Froborr> Yeah.
[14:34] <Froborr> On the other hand the Elements of Harmony no longer exist, so matching them up may not be necessary.
[14:35] <Arrlaari> Maybe not as like literal tokens of power
[14:35] <Arrlaari> but they are still abstract concepts that ponies understand, value, and associate with the ponies who used to weild the literal tokens of power
[14:36] <Arrlaari> Like, Applejack is still an unusually honest pony who feels personally offended by the existence of two con men who are literally named after deception
[14:37] <Froborr> True.
[14:38] <Froborr> And most of the established members of the Starlight Squad do share EoH-related traits with their corresponding Mane Six.
[14:38] <Froborr> Not too sure about Trixie and Generosity, though.
[14:39] <Arrlaari> Yeah, could Trixie be loyalty?
[14:40] <Arrlaari> Insofar as a lot of her rehabilitation has involved doing things she would rather not for the sake of her friendship with Starlight
[14:40] <Froborr> Hmm, she does share as many traits with RD as she does with Rarity–tendency to show off, to act without thinking, to be a bit oblivious to others’ feelings…
[14:40] <Arrlaari> Who in turn had to deal with a Loyalty challenge due to Trixie and Twilight just not liking each other
[14:40] <Froborr> *nods* Makes sense.
[14:43] <Arrlaari> So, if we need a Rarity now, how about the new Dragon Queen? She’s by definition high society, attuned to gems (in that they are central to her diet), and leading reform of a selfishness oriented culture?
[14:43] <Arrlaari> On the other hand it’s highly unlikely that she’d move to ponyville to be a regular
[14:44] <Arrlaari> Wait, I’m missing a very obvious choice who alread lives in Ponyville and was mentioned when we were discussing reformed antagonists: Diamond Tiara
[14:45] <Froborr> Ooh, that’s a good idea!

  1. Wow, that would be an interesting choice to round out the Second Six. It occurs to me we’ve barely seen DT after her reformation, and that was a season and a half ago.
In other news, I can’t make it tomorrow on account of it being dress rehearsal weekend and I’ll be at the theatre from 9 to 5.
