Episode 3
[13:04] <Sylocat> Was the tail-stepping a metaphor for the pre-hammerspace accidental perving in most harem anime?
[13:04] <Froborr> Yeah, probably.
[13:05] <Sylocat> Hmm, I never noticed that last part of the OP, with the flower faces before
[13:06] <mere_oblivion> ads
[13:06] <Sylocat> Paused at 2:06
[13:07] <Arrlaari> OK, the tickets sold out, in ads
[13:07] <Sylocat> Ouch.
[13:07] <Arrlaari> (Blizzcon tickets are infamous for selling out actual seconds after they queues open)
[13:07] <mere_oblivion> Back
[13:09] <Arrlaari> paused after ads
[13:10] <Sylocat> Everyone ready?
[13:10] <Froborr> Yep.
[13:10] <Arrlaari> yes
[13:10] <Sylocat> Okay…
[13:10] <Sylocat> Click
[13:10] <mere_oblivion> ‘deed
[13:10] <Sylocat> What’s wrong with these apartments?
[13:10] <Froborr> Every single one of these apartments has a kitchen a billion times better than mine.
[13:11] <Froborr> I hate my kitchen so much…
[13:11] <mere_oblivion> Have you tried singing “la la la” while cleaning it?
[13:11] <Sylocat> Ahahah… I lvoe her cleaning song
[13:11] <Sylocat> Doesn’t her fire breath take care of the bacteria?
[13:12] <Sylocat> Ahahah they pixellated it
[13:12] <Sylocat> I love it
[13:13] <Froborr> I am feeling personally attacked right now.
[13:13] <mere_oblivion> ABout disorder?
[13:13] <Froborr> Everything but the beer cans is 100% me.
[13:14] <Sylocat> Oh dear the photo album
[13:14] <mere_oblivion> “Dead-fish eyes” is a compliment?
[13:14] <Sylocat> They’re dragons, so…
[13:14] <mere_oblivion> ah
[13:14] <Sylocat> She’s a cosplayer?
[13:15] <Sylocat> So this show’s entire premise is queer-lensing anime fan service tropes
[13:16] <Froborr> Looking that way, yeah.
[13:17] <Sylocat> She keeps her uniform on in the tub
[13:17] <Sylocat> Because of course she does
[13:17] <Froborr> I don’t think they’re in the tub.
[13:18] <Sylocat> Oh… right, I didn’t notice that
[13:19] <Sylocat> Is this a dream sequence?
[13:19] <Sylocat> Oh… maybe not
[13:19] <Sylocat> I’m surprised no neighbors interrupted them
[13:19] <mere_oblivion> me too
[13:19] <Arrlaari> ad
[13:19] <Sylocat> Paused at 11:20
[13:20] <Froborr> In my experience of living in a building that had one, no one ever actually uses the rooftop access.
[13:20] <Sylocat> Really?
[13:20] <mere_oblivion> Too shy?
[13:21] <mere_oblivion> Or at least, too shy to use it for bathing?
[13:21] <Froborr> I think it’s mostly just that after one or two times up there, you realize it’s kind of pointless?
[13:22] <Froborr> I mean, nice view, but a nice view you just saw yesterday isn’t that interesting…
[13:22] <Sylocat> Hmm… good point
[13:22] <mere_oblivion> Back from ads
[13:23] <Arrlaari> So one thing that you often see in boner service tropes is that the woman/girl will get angry and retaliate with comically exaggurated violence. Often there’s a suggestion is that this offense is a pretense maintained for propriety. In addition to recontextualising those tropes in a W/W relationship, they’ve dropped that.
[13:24] <Froborr> Good point, Arr.
[13:24] <Sylocat> Yeah… another twist is that it wasn’t the tsundere who got groped
[13:24] <Sylocat> It was the one who openly explicitly wants the protagonist
[13:24] <Arrlaari> Paused after advertisement.
[13:24] <Sylocat> Okay…
[13:24] <Sylocat> Click
[13:25] <Sylocat> Oh yikes, noisy neighbors
[13:25] <Sylocat> Or was it them after all?
[13:25] <Sylocat> Ah, no, it was the neighbors
[13:26] <Sylocat> Ah, so Tohru got warned ahead of time not to murder anyone? That’s refreshingly convenient
[13:27] <Sylocat> What a simile!
[13:27] <Sylocat> Hand-carved and he’s using a drill?
[13:27] <mere_oblivion> Bit odd, that
[13:28] <Arrlaari> Probably a small hand-held drill
[13:28] <Sylocat> Cooperation rather than arguing? What a revolutionary concept?
[13:30] <Sylocat> Was that teeth-grinding?
[13:30] <Froborr> Yep.
[13:31] <Arrlaari> So, there wasn’t enough time to read that letter without pausing, but I’ve read it before, it’s the office’s cherry blossom watching party
[13:32] <Sylocat> “Fafnir” is a demon name, right? I’ve heard it somewhere before
[13:32] <Froborr> Fafnir is the dragon from the Ring of the Nibelung cycle.
[13:32] <mere_oblivion> One of the giants in the Ring
[13:32] <mere_oblivion> Oops, dragon
[13:32] <Froborr> No, you’re right, it’s a giant that transformed itself into a dragon.
[13:32] <Sylocat> What an introduction
[13:33] <Sylocat> …wat
[13:33] <Arrlaari> Dark Souls
[13:33] <Sylocat> Showing an actual video game on the screen. That’s a hilarious fourth wall nod AND a money-saving option
[13:34] <Sylocat> The choice of game is perfect as well
[13:34] <Froborr> Not sure whether it’d be a money-saver. Depends on whether they have to pay the game maker for rights.
[13:34] <Arrlaari> I’m not sure if that’s actual Dark Souls or a lookalike they made up
[13:34] <Sylocat> Would it qualify as product placement?
[13:35] <Sylocat> I remember the GUI of Dark Souls looking different, but I haven’t played in a while
[13:35] <Sylocat> so I could be wrong
[13:35] <Arrlaari> ad
[13:35] <Arrlaari> But I think that was the last shot of the episode
[13:35] <Sylocat> I think it’s just the OP after this, though there might be a post-credits scene
[13:36] <Froborr> That thing about Quetzlcoatl getting drunk and hitting on his little sister is a real myth.
[13:36] <Sylocat> Really?
[13:36] <Froborr> After he sobers up he sets himself on fire as repentence, becoming the morning star.
[13:36] <Arrlaari> Did the real myth gender Quetzlcoatl as a man?
[13:36] <mere_oblivion> That’s . . . quite a repentance
[13:37] <Froborr> Yes, Quetzcoatl is a major Central American god, AFAIK always gendered male.
[13:37] <Sylocat> It’s just the preview after the credits
Episode 4
[13:44] <Sylocat> Dragons have internet, because of course they do
[13:44] <Froborr> No, they taught Tohru  to use it in the first ep, remember?
[13:44] <Sylocat> …Oh, right. I forgot
[13:46] <Arrlaari> ad
[13:46] <Sylocat> Paused at 2:38
[13:47] <Arrlaari> paused after advertisement
[13:48] <mere_oblivion> i’ve still got ads galore
[13:49] <mere_oblivion> okay, ready
[13:49] <Sylocat> Okay…
[13:49] <Sylocat> Click
[13:49] <Sylocat> Tohru isn’t necessarily wrong
[13:51] <Sylocat> I believe they manufacture staplers that look like dragon heads
[13:51] <Sylocat> …Well, that went from hilarious to awkward in a hurry
[13:51] <Sylocat> (which was kinda the point I suppose)
[13:51] <Sylocat> That footnote tho
[13:52] <Sylocat> The rabbit toy’s facial expression matches her own
[13:53] <Sylocat> Designed by the school? No wonder it looks so much like a dungeon
[13:54] <mere_oblivion> Does just shopping in it make you want to kill yourself?
[13:56] <mere_oblivion> ads
[13:56] <Sylocat> Paused at 10:10
[13:57] <Sylocat> Halfway through the episode and the school segment hasn’t even started yet?
[13:57] <Arrlaari> advertisement
[13:57] <Arrlaari> (I unpaused late after the last ad break)
[13:57] <Froborr> The shopping for supplies WAS relentlessly cute, though.
[13:57] <Sylocat> Oh yeah
[13:58] <mere_oblivion> I’m set again
[13:58] <Arrlaari> The conversation about uniforms made an impression on me
[13:58] <Sylocat> I’m predicting half the punchlines will be “Kanna actually enjoys school and the other kids think that’s weird”
[13:58] <Froborr> Yeah. It summed up pretty well why I find the very concept of school uniforms creepy.
[13:58] <Sylocat> Indeed
[14:00] <mere_oblivion> Ready?
[14:00] <Arrlaari> The word that the translators gave as “eliminated” was “haijosuru” – the same verb that came up over and over in Yurikuma, where the subtitles used “excluded”
[14:00] <Arrlaari> paused after advertisements
[14:00] <Sylocat> Okay…
[14:00] <Sylocat> Click
[14:01] <Froborr> So “ostracized” basically.
[14:01] <mere_oblivion> that’s rather a profound difference, Arr
[14:02] <Froborr> Not that different given what happened to the excluded girls in Yurikuma…
[14:02] <mere_oblivion> Ah
[14:02] <Sylocat> Maybe the Yurikuma subtitles translated it differently to make the metaphor clearer
[14:02] <Sylocat> Uh oh
[14:02] <Sylocat> Oh snap
[14:04] <Sylocat> That was weird and adorable
[14:05] <Sylocat> Huh, the actual school day was a surprisingly brief part of the episode
[14:06] <Sylocat> I saw that coming, but still, it was funny
[14:06] <Sylocat> Whoa… dream sequence?
[14:06] <Sylocat> Or flash-forward?
[14:06] <Sylocat> Oh… the next school day doesn’t go as well
[14:07] <Froborr> What is up with that girl’s forehead?
[14:07] <Sylocat> Why are they wearing hard hats?
[14:08] <Froborr> They’re rain hats.
[14:08] <Froborr> Which doesn’t really answer the question, but. *shrug*
[14:08] <mere_oblivion> A hard rain’s gonna fall?
[14:08] <Sylocat> Well something is definitely going to fall now
[14:09] <Sylocat> Her forehead is a mirror for some reason
[14:11] <Sylocat> Might want to go back to the grassy field from the second episode first?
[14:11] <Sylocat> Well, they do basically own the playground now
[14:12] <Sylocat> “That’s at my standards.” I love it
[14:12] <mere_oblivion> Dragons playing dodgeball = dragonball?
[14:12] <Sylocat> Well, that went several directions I wasn’t expecting
[14:13] <mere_oblivion> delightful ones
[14:14] <Sylocat> Wow
[14:14] <Froborr> Indeed.
[14:17] <Arrlaari> I can’t remember where I’ve seen the shiny forehead before but I have the vague impression that having a shiny forehead is culturally associated with a Type
[14:17] <Sylocat> In addition to appreciating the queer lensifying, I like the juxtaposition of skewering anime’s decidedly-adolescent romance tropes while having the main character be an actual adult with adult problems
[14:18] <Arrlaari> I dunno if it’s always skewering
[14:18] <Sylocat> Maybe skewering is the wrong term
[14:18] <Arrlaari> I feel like the parts of the show that are familiar are the weak points. The strong parts are the jokes about how they are dragons, or the world they’re from is basically always at war, and the scenes that take seriously the idea that Kanna and Tohru are Kobayashi’s family now
[14:19] <Sylocat> Like, playing with expectations
[14:19] <Froborr> I’m with Arr, I feel like the show is at its weakest when it’s most harem-y.
[14:19] <Froborr> Then again I just really strongly dislike harem shows, so.
[14:20] <mere_oblivion> Were the harem-y parts less frequent in this last ep? Seemed so to me
[14:20] <Froborr> Yeah, they definitely were.
[14:20] <Arrlaari> Yeah, it was a Kanna focus episode
[14:20] <Sylocat> Well, yeah, since it was a School episode, focusing on the kids
[14:21] <Sylocat> Personally, though, I was only half-kidding when I said “It’s nice to see queer shows allegorize relationship tropes as Problematically as straight shows”
[14:22] <Arrlaari> The weakest part of this episode was “lol Lucoa’s tits amirite” and tbh this was probably Quetzcoatl’s best episode
[14:27] <Sylocat> I’m having trouble putting into words what I meant…
[14:30] <Sylocat> And I should probably get to rehearsal. I’ll go into more detail next time I guess
[14:30] <Froborr> All right. ANy other comments before I post up?
[14:31] <mere_oblivion> Please do! And have a blast at rehearsal, sylo
[14:31] <Sylocat> Also break a leg tonight, dad
[14:31] <Arrlaari> Just that “haijosuru” meaning either “exclude” or “eliminate” says a lot
[14:33] <Froborr> Yeah. I can see it–to be excluded is to be abandoned is to die alone. But it says something.
