Episode 7
[14:00] <Sylocat> Ah, is she the killer from the previous episode?
01[14:00] <Froborr> Yep.
01[14:00] <Froborr> She reminds me of a character from something else, but I can’t place who or what.
[14:01] <Sylocat> …Ah, so we’re tossing a sci-fi disease into the mix?
[14:02] <Sylocat> Called “serenity,” no less
[14:02] <mere_oblivion> Hope Joss isn’t feeling hurt
[14:04] <Sylocat> A week ago? I thought the previous episode happened like yesterday or something
[14:04] <mere_oblivion> Hmm.
[14:05] <Sylocat> I suppose it would have taken a little longer than overnight to get a body prepared like that
[14:05] <Sylocat> (I mean, not that I’ve ever done it myself… *nervous laughter*)
[14:05] <mere_oblivion> I’ll vouch for that.
[14:05] <mere_oblivion> One of my only bad habits Sylo hasn’t picked up
01[14:05] <Froborr> She wasn’t looking at your face, dude.
[14:07] <Sylocat> If it’s three years apart, it obviously wasn’t the same student helping out the white-haired guy, right?
[14:08] <Arrlaari> “A way to create a pretext” is probably the same as “do something stupid”
[14:09] <mere_oblivion> *Grab* their butts? I can’t even pronounce their butts.
01[14:09] <Froborr> I wonder if this is going to be like American Psycho 2, where someone traumatized by witnessing a past serial killer starts committing copycat murders years later.
[14:10] <mere_oblivion> I’m not sure “blurry” really covers that picture.
[14:10] <Sylocat> Ah, they have a picture of the white-haired guy?
[14:11] <mere_oblivion> Kierkegaard?! Superboss.
[14:12] <Sylocat> The tie-ins to classic literature are a running theme, IIRC
[14:12] <mere_oblivion> And given that the quote is translated from Danish into Japanese into English, it’s pretty close.
[14:12] <mere_oblivion> (Though it’s possible her father read SK in an English translation? Not really key to the story, I guess.
[14:14] <mere_oblivion> In Japan, this music is known as the Ode to Soy.
[14:14] <Sylocat> Ah, so this is how this thread ties together
01[14:14] <Froborr> Great choice of music–one of the more bombastic parts of “Ode to Joy,” transitioning into the more famous, actually joyous parts. A piece speculated, I should note, to be an expression of bipolar disorder.
[14:15] <Sylocat> Urobuchi does love his semiotics
[14:15] <mere_oblivion> Cruel, vivid nightmares using girls’ bodies. Nicholas Winding Refn?
[14:16] <Sylocat> I like how nuanced this show is in its treatment of this premise that in most other sci-fi stories would be a one-dimensional dystopian nightmare
[14:18] <mere_oblivion> Excellent description of one aspect of Madoka too, of course.
[14:19] <Sylocat> Ooh, glowy eyes
[14:19] <Sylocat> What the heck?
[14:20] <mere_oblivion> I don’t do too well around “blood and stuff,” either
[14:20] <Sylocat> Those appearance-modifying clothes can apparently modify more than clothes
[14:21] <mere_oblivion> With the greatest of ease!
[14:23] <Sylocat> Huh.
[14:23] <Sylocat> I wonder if the classmate who told her not to get involved will help rescue her
[14:24] <Sylocat> Welp, only one way to find out. Shall we press on?
[14:24] <mere_oblivion> Capital notion
[14:25] <Arrlaari> I wonder if this victim will be The Survivor
[14:25] <Sylocat> Anything’s possible
[14:25] <Arrlaari> That she’s the first whose experience is being shown suggests to me that she will be, but on the other hand the circumstances are grim and it may be the girl who suspects the culprit who will ultimately be the survivor
Episode 8
[14:30] <Sylocat> …I guess The Survivor is yet to come
[14:31] <Sylocat> “Narrow it down?” He has to know the cops are on to the school
[14:32] <Sylocat> …This is one of those “The villain has a point” villain speeches
01[14:32] <Froborr> That is a GREAT way to describe traditional marriage/gender roles.
[14:32] <Sylocat> Indeed ’tis
[14:32] <Sylocat> I want one of those little scanning robots
01[14:32] <Froborr> Of course she’s complaining about treating women like objects while LITERALLY TURNING WOMEN  INTO OBJECTS…
[14:33] <Sylocat> …Is that Akane in the trenchcoat?
[14:33] <Sylocat> Or not.
[14:34] <Sylocat> “I don’t recall.” A truly universal statement
01[14:34] <Froborr> Hahaha his memory was shit.
[14:35] <Sylocat> Ouch, now that’s a harsh art review
[14:36] <Sylocat> “Sort of like” profiling?
[14:37] <Sylocat> …So it’s a Precrime prison, then?
[14:37] <mere_oblivion> Can i combine the cell with books and the cell with the hash-pipe (or whatever that was)?
[14:38] <Sylocat> Nice ink, dude
[14:39] <Sylocat> That was quick
[14:39] <Sylocat> Ahahahah….
[14:40] <Sylocat> …Was the pompous school official’s voice fading in an out to represent the fact that the enforcer guy wasn’t listening, or was it just my speakers?
[14:40] <Sylocat> I’m pretty sure this is gonna raise the crime coefficients of some of the students there
01[14:40] <Froborr> Just your speakers, I think.
[14:41] <Sylocat> Ah, well, I was right that the random classmate from that scene would be on the case
[14:43] <Sylocat> Ah, so he is a teacher there
[14:44] <mere_oblivion> Parts of this remind me of The Neon Demon, except this isn’t pretentious, exploitative twaddle.
[14:44] <Sylocat> Wait, so this woman is that blonde lady’s girlfriend from the HQ scenes, right?
01[14:45] <Froborr> Yep. She’s one of the enforcers.
01[14:45] <Froborr> Seems like their tech person?
[14:46] <Arrlaari> She’s the one dating their tech person
01[14:46] <Froborr> I thought the blonde woman was more forensics/medical stuff, the dark-haired woman is more computers.
[14:47] <Sylocat> …What in the name of…
[14:47] <Sylocat> This show changes genres at a moment’s notice
[14:47] <Sylocat> Ah, the callback
[14:48] <Sylocat> Ooh, she gets the last word in
01[14:49] <Froborr> Okay, but having the robot hellhounds destroy her hands first was some impressive cruelty.
[14:49] <Sylocat> Indeed
[14:50] <Sylocat> And she still managed to maintain control at the very end
[14:51] <Sylocat> I’m predicting that the guy who shot her really will wind up in her position later on as she predicted
01[14:52] <Froborr> Seems likely.
[14:52] <Sylocat> Well, I loved her monologue about marriage and will be shamelessly pilfering it
[14:53] <Arrlaari> The mention of isolation for the prison suggests that at the time of writing, Urobuchi was not aware of what solitary confinement does to people
[14:53] <mere_oblivion> “Cry while you can, otherwise your Hue will get cloudy.” (roughly the 17:00 mark) That’s gonna be one of my new year’s resolutions.
[14:53] <Arrlaari> I suppose one could wave it away by saying the prisoners are allowed to video chat with each other
[14:53] <Sylocat> We’re assuming it’s 24/7 solitary, there could be a communal area
[14:54] <Sylocat> Now that’d be an interesting setting for a story all on its own
01[14:54] <Froborr> Yeah, I loved that line about crying. Especially because it’s precisely opposite to how most anime treat crying.
[14:54] <mere_oblivion> Really? It is usually frowned upon?
[14:55] <Arrlaari> Anyway, I distinctly remember that the blonde lady was running the tech analysis when they were tracking the virtual idol impersonator
[14:55] <Sylocat> It’s a mixed bag
[14:56] <Arrlaari> It’s very cliche for one character to start crying and another to immediately say “don’t cry”, framed as a gesture of comfort
[14:57] <mere_oblivion> Ah
[14:59] <Arrlaari> It’s also common for one character to tell of how another character was suffering but gave no sign, and frame it as an admirable feat of will & altruism
[14:59] <Arrlaari> In fact, I recall an account from a real person regarding his mother which was of that form
[15:00] <Sylocat> To be fair that does often get twisted around into a danger sign as well (see: Sephiroth)
[15:00] <Arrlaari> I think he was a major figure in animation? Or Kurosawa?
01[15:00] <Froborr> Yeah, my understanding is that it’s a cultural thing–suffering in silence without disturbing others is considered a praiseworthy sacrifice for the well-being of the community, basically.
[15:01] <mere_oblivion> Despite what it does to one’s Hue?!?
[15:02] <Sylocat> Eeyup
[15:03] <Sylocat> I mean, that’s hardly unique to Japan, it’s just that many other cultures are more passive-aggressive about enforcing it
01[15:04] <Froborr> True.
01[15:04] <Froborr> I mean, part of why it stands out to me is that I was subjected to it as a kid, and it fucked me up badly.
[15:04] <mere_oblivion> Despite how easy it is to make fun of our wear-your-emotions-on-your-sleeve (or at least on your Facebook page)-at-all-times culture, it does have its psychological benefits.
[15:05] <Arrlaari> I was under the impression that making fun of wear-your-emotions-on-your-sleeve (or at least on your Facebook page)-at-all-times culture was an expression of Reaction
[15:05] <Arrlaari> Which I suppose is consistent with saying that it’s easy
[15:06] <mere_oblivion> Oh, it is mostly Reactionaries who make a point of it, but i even have friends who are a tad weary of its prominence on Facebook (otoh, said friends are my age, namely mid-60s)
01[15:09] <Froborr> But yeah, it’s right here in the US of A that I was told I wasn’t allowed to mourn because eldest boy.
[15:10] <mere_oblivion> Which stinks to high heaven.
[15:10] <Sylocat> Which ties into your comments about Jung in your FMA:B review as well
01[15:11] <Froborr> Thank you, mere.
01[15:11] <Froborr> Sylo: which comments do you mean?
[15:11] <mere_oblivion> And I fear it still happens all over the world.
[15:12] <Sylocat> The one about how, despite his models being flawed, Jung’s practical techniques (like, say, not denying your emotions lest they boil over and control you all the more) are actually quite useful, sort of like the alchemists of old
01[15:12] <Froborr> Ah. Yes.
