[18:04] <@Sylocat> “Creepy?”
[18:04] <Arrlaari> This obviously benevolent power sure is creepy
[18:05] <mere_oblivion> So she’s a student at the Academy?
[18:05] <@Sylocat> So she doesn’t know she’s a planet, I guess
01[18:05] <Froborr> Hey, healing can be a really creepy power.
[18:05] <mere_oblivion> That’s a lot not to know about oneself. And yes, it can be.
[18:05] <Arrlaari> If she is a planet, not knowing it would be consistent with all the inner scouts
01[18:05] <Froborr> After all, it takes only a very slight shift in aim to target the dozen or so cancerous growths you have in your body at any given time.
[18:06] <@Sylocat> True
[18:06] <Arrlaari> ad
01[18:07] <Froborr> Or whatever nasty infection your immune system is currently handing without you noticing.
01[18:07] <Froborr> *handling
[18:07] <@Sylocat> Paused at end of credits
[18:07] <Arrlaari> Shortly after the first season of Korra wrapped it occured to me to suspect that the talent a waterbender needs to bloodbend is identical to the talent necessary to be a healer
[18:08] <Arrlaari> paused after ad
[18:08] <@Sylocat> Okay then…
[18:08] <@Sylocat> Click
[18:08] <@Sylocat> Yeesh, whatever she’s got, it’s bad
01[18:08] <Froborr> Okay, these scientists aren’t creepy at all.
[18:08] <@Sylocat> Gee, I wonder if THIS guy is evil
[18:09] <@Sylocat> Isn’t Kaori the one who was giving orders to the five evil girls last episode?
01[18:09] <Froborr> Hmm, current wild speculation, what Hotaru has is her healing power–she’s absorbing the damage to others.
01[18:09] <Froborr> Yeah, I think she is.
01[18:09] <Froborr> And interesting, Obviously Evil Guy is Hotaru’s dad.
01[18:10] <Froborr> …Or, what she has is an evil dad intentionally keeping her sick.
01[18:10] <Froborr> …Oh, his hand was just cold, not siphoning life force or anything.
[18:10] <mere_oblivion> Where can i get one of those amulets?
[18:10] <@Sylocat> And it hadn’t occurred to him to give her that until now
[18:10] <mere_oblivion> Right.
[18:10] <@Sylocat> Wait, the attacks are a recent development?
[18:11] <Arrlaari> I think it’s the severity that’s unprecedented?
[18:11] <mere_oblivion> I think that’s true, Arr.
[18:11] <@Sylocat> Oh come on, they haven’t made the connection? They’re not even wearing masks!
[18:12] <Arrlaari> Let’s completely change the suspect to this completely unrelated pair of SUSPICIOUS CHARACTERS
01[18:12] <Froborr> I continue to assume that part of the transformation sequence is a significant change in facial features, we just can’t tell because everyone is drawn with the same face-shape anyway.
[18:13] <@Sylocat> There’s a surfeit of villains in this arc
[18:15] <@Sylocat> So he has a pentagram on his false eye
[18:16] <@Sylocat> IIRC, in the original anime, for the first who-knows-how-many-episodes of this arc we only saw Professor Tomoe in shadow, with his glasses shining out of the darkness
[18:16] <@Sylocat> Wait, so this is how she figures it out?
[18:17] <Arrlaari> Usagi is not fucking around this episode
[18:17] <Arrlaari> ad
01[18:17] <Froborr> Wow, Usagi actually got really close there.
01[18:19] <Froborr> Also: I am now FAIRLY SURE that they are looking for the three sacred treasures of Japan, and that for once the Silver Millennium Crystal isn’t one of them.
[18:19] <Arrlaari> Sylo: Remember Frob hasn’t seen the old anime, so be cagey about saying things about it
[18:20] <Arrlaari> paused after ad
01[18:20] <Froborr> Also I think I misremembered the name of the sword last time, it’s Kusanagi.
[18:20] <@Sylocat> Okay then…
[18:20] <@Sylocat> Click
[18:20] <@Sylocat> What in the name of sanity is she eating?
01[18:20] <Froborr> A very large and elaborate sundae, and I’m seriously jealous.
[18:21] <@Sylocat> Yeah, I gotta learn how to make that
[18:22] <@Sylocat> Wait, is Eudial supposed to be a doppelganger of Kaolinite? Because even for anime characters, they look way too much alike
[18:22] <Arrlaari> It looks like Eudial is being set up as mirroring Mars
01[18:23] <Froborr> Are… are they drunk?
01[18:23] <Froborr> They’re all blushing…
[18:23] <@Sylocat> Well what ELSE was Ami going to bring? Seriously
[18:23] <Arrlaari> A bad hunch is a reason to have backup
[18:24] <@Sylocat> Come on, sparring match!
[18:24] <@Sylocat> Oh, this is gonna be good
[18:25] <@Sylocat> She’s not down that easily
[18:25] <@Sylocat> …That was anticlimactic
[18:26] <@Sylocat> …The heck?
01[18:27] <Froborr> So on top of everything else, the school is a cult. Huh.
[18:27] <@Sylocat> And now for the transformation sequence that saves them several minutes’ worth of animation budget each episode
01[18:27] <Froborr> At least it’s probably only two of them this time.
[18:27] <mere_oblivion> It does seem a tad . . . unfair/tedious
[18:28] <mere_oblivion> But yes, only the two.
01[18:28] <Froborr> Are… are they fighting RPG protagonists?
[18:28] <Arrlaari> Eudial is looking for LV
[18:28] <@Sylocat> I love the amount of katakana that the subtitles have to translate word for word
[18:29] <@Sylocat> Whoa, they skippied the other transformation sequences?
[18:29] <Arrlaari> Usagi is not fucking around this episode
[18:29] <@Sylocat> Well, they didn’t skip the animation for the Heart Attack
[18:29] <mere_oblivion> That was thoughtful
01[18:29] <Froborr> Damn, first IDing Haruka and then going straight for the killshot?
01[18:29] <Froborr> You’re very right, Arr.
[18:30] <@Sylocat> “ruined?” Is that their softer term for dead?
[18:30] <@Sylocat> Whoa
[18:30] <Arrlaari> ad
[18:31] <@Sylocat> It’s just the credits after this
[18:31] <mere_oblivion> Whoa indeed
01[18:32] <Froborr> Well, Usagi’s harem has grown to include a genderqueer lesbian now.
01[18:32] <Froborr> Good for her!
[18:38] <@Sylocat> Ah that’s right, Rainbow Dash is actually sort of part of the Wonderbolts now
[18:39] <@Sylocat> (citation: Rarity Investigates)
[18:39] <@Sylocat> And now she’s getting stage fright?
[18:39] <@Sylocat> Oh. For about two seconds
01[18:41] <Froborr> Oh, “balm”! I thought she said “wing bomb,” I was very confused.
[18:41] <@Sylocat> “Dave Rapp?” He’s a new writer I think
[18:41] <mere_oblivion> Me too, Froborr.
01[18:41] <Froborr> I think so too, the name is not familiar.
[18:42] <@Sylocat> And disaster is about to ensue
[18:43] <@Sylocat> 5…4…3…2…1…
[18:43] <@Sylocat> Huh, I was expecting her to get blindsided when she crossed
01[18:43] <Froborr> Same here, but that’s more Looney Tunes than MLP, isn’t it?
[18:44] <@Sylocat> I’m surprised there haven’t been more references to General Firefly.
[18:44] <Arrlaari> Alarmingly specific reiteration of childhood stuff
[18:45] <mere_oblivion> Okay, so the blindsiding got postponed a bit.
[18:45] <@Sylocat> So, she’s gonna do another Sonic Rainboom before this episode is up
01[18:45] <Froborr> Pretty likely, yeah.
[18:46] <@Sylocat> I’m half expecting Lightning Dust to show up
[18:47] <@Sylocat> Hazing ritual?
01[18:47] <Froborr> That rule seems… counterproductive.
[18:47] <Arrlaari> It’s also common in sports
01[18:47] <Froborr> Giving the worst flier of the day extra work that WON’T improve their performance?
01[18:48] <Froborr> Wouldn’t it make more sense, if you’re going to punish the worst performer, to make them do extra drills in the performance?
[18:48] <Arrlaari> The theory is to leverage shame as a motivator, which is a common theory that I recall you don’t believe in
[18:49] <@Sylocat> What did she do to her mane?
[18:49] <Arrlaari> So she’s cycling through impressions of each of her friends
[18:50] <Arrlaari> trying to get a different nickname based on each
[18:50] <@Sylocat> I love hearing Ashleigh Ball doing a deliberately-terrible Ashleigh Ball impression
[18:50] <@Sylocat> It’s like on Orphan Black when one clone has to pretend to be another clone
01[18:51] <Froborr> Yeah, that was pretty impressive how she made Rainbow Dash pretending to be Applejack sound nothing like Applejack while also sounding like Applejack.
01[18:52] <Froborr> My brain went to a rather older reference, the episode of Buffy with Willow’s vampire doppleganger.
[18:52] <@Sylocat> …Have we ever seen Spitfire out of costume before?
[18:52] <Arrlaari> I expect that the resolution of this episode is going to be Rainbow Dash just telling the team what the problem is
[18:52] <@Sylocat> Aww, she has a picture of her friends inside her locker
01[18:52] <Froborr> Aw, she had a group shot of the main six in her lcoker door.
01[18:53] <Froborr> lol
[18:53] <@Sylocat> Jinx
[18:53] <mere_oblivion> Damn, I recall that episode very fondly, Froborr. Didn’t she come on to herself and later tell Buffy “I think I’m kinda gay”?
01[18:53] <Froborr> Yep, it was the first real bit of foreshadowing for that.
[18:54] <@Sylocat> Edward G. Robinson also did that, in “The Whole Town’s Talking.”
[18:54] <@Sylocat> Not the gayness, the playing two characters who have to pretend to be one another
[18:54] <mere_oblivion> Right. An amazing performance, even for EGR.
[18:55] <@Sylocat> Even Scootaloo knows this plan is terrible? Yeesh
[18:56] <@Sylocat> Whoa
[18:57] <@Sylocat> She gets tons of applause for this, I assume
[18:59] <Arrlaari> I really expected Dash to tell them about the childhood incident and how it was fucking her up
[18:59] <@Sylocat> Huh
01[19:00] <Froborr> Hrrm.
01[19:00] <Froborr> Not sure how I felt about that one.
01[19:00] <Froborr> I’m with Arr, I was really expecting that to be the resolution.
[19:00] <@Sylocat> Yeah, I was too
[19:01] <@Sylocat> Maybe they thought it would be a retread of her earlier challenges?
01[19:02] <Froborr> Hmm, maybe.
[19:03] <mere_oblivion> Thanks, guys. See you all next week!
01[19:03] <Froborr> Next week!
[19:04] <@Sylocat> I mean, I appreciate that this arc is actually progressing, rather than having her flunk out so she can have to try out for them all over again
[19:05] <Arrlaari> I figured that “Clipper” was also a nickname based on a rookie mistake, but I didn’t make the inference that revealing that would be the resolution
01[19:05] <Froborr> I thought “Oh, these nicknames are actually affectionate!” would be PART of the resolution.
[19:06] <@Sylocat> I thought they were.
01[19:06] <Froborr> Like, they reveal that, and then Dash responds, “Yeah, but mine really hurts because it WASN’T affectionate when I was a kid,” and they give her a knew one.
01[19:06] <Froborr> I mean as opposed to it being the entirety of the resolution.
[19:06] <@Sylocat> Oh, that’s what you meant
[19:16] <Arrlaari> I agree with your thoughts about the MLP ep, I was going to go back and try to see if there was any Sailor Moon thoughts since we moved on pretty quick
01[19:18] <Froborr> Cool, lemme know if you do.
[19:22] <Arrlaari> It looks like no-one commented when Haruka chided them for presuming that women can’t compete with men on equal footing
01[19:22] <Froborr> Yeah, that was a nice moment but I couldn’t find much to say about it except how very 90s it was.
[19:23] <Arrlaari> Well competitive sports is still gender segregated today
01[19:24] <Froborr> True.
01[19:25] <Froborr> And you have stuff like the U.S. women’s soccer team getting paid a quarter what the men’s team does even though by every conceivable measure they’re both better and bring in more revenue.
01[19:25] <Froborr> What I meant was more that Usagi’s line that provoked Haruka’s response felt very 90s.
[19:31] <Arrlaari> It’s also amusing that Haruka’s line is a response to an insult: They presume she’s a man but actually she’s a woman who was doing the thing they’re saying she couldn’t do when they interrupted her
01[19:38] <Froborr> Haha, true.

  1. Terrible Episode that encourages hazing.
Hazing is something found in a lot of fields and a lot of walks of life. It’s unprofessional and ineffective. If hazing is successfully performing a task or getting somebody to improve, then it’s a guarantee that you could have achieved the same result far more quickly with literally any other form of behavior modification.
The thing about Newbie Dash is that it just stops dead in it’s tracks in the middle of the third act and Rainbow just capitulates to the Wonderbolts’ behavior. While suspension of disbelief is a necessity in all storytelling to an extent, if your story can be completely unraveled with a single line of dialogue (”Don’t call me Rainbow Crash”). But instead she just accepts it at the last second, leaving a very poisonous message. There’s a reason I gave it a “D” for it’s Lesson.
Hazing has always been difficult to address, because every form of it (schoolyard bullying, physical parenting, military hazing, ect) has always had it’s staunch defenders. Usually people who pull the tiresome platitude of “I went through it and I turned out fine!” However in reality, not only did those people NOT turn out as fine as they like to think they did, but every study done on the matter has proven that it is the slowest and least effective method of educating anybody.
Hazing still has it’s defenders despite being thoroughly discredited as a worthwhile application of behavioral science. Spanking still has it’s defenders despite being thoroughly discredited as an effective parenting technique. Some people really are that stupid and stubborn.
