Anime Boston 2016 Schedule

I will be at Anime Boston this coming weekend, March 25 – 27, at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston! I’ll be presenting the following panels, all more or less new (dates/times/rooms subject to change):

  • 10-11 a.m. Friday, Hynes Panel 302/304: EVA Pilots, Rose Brides, and Puella Magi: Heroic Truma and Anime
  • 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Hynes Panel 310: The Duel Named Revolution: Making Sense of Revolutionary Girl Utena (based loosely on the series of entries I did on Utena back when)
  • 1-2 p.m. Friday, Latin Latin Madoka More Latin V: The Incubators Strike Back
  • 7:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Hynes Panel 208: Analyzing Anime 101: How to Watch
  • 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Sheraton Panel Constitution 1: Fullmetal Alchemy: Real-World Alchemical Tradition and FMA (based loosely on the entry of the same name I did back when)

Stop by if you’re in the neighborhood! If not, I intend to record all of them except Analyzing Anime, which has too much audience participation to work as a video.

  1. I just wanted to send my utmost appreciation of your panels this year at AB2016, culminated with a Tour de Force on Alchemy (wow!) I was a Philopsophy major, plus my ex- band manager was an older friend steeped in the occult. So I’m the guy who loves the intellectual angle to your panels without knowing much or anything about the anime texts themselves. Last year, I was rewarded with your Apocalyptic/Revolution treatment that introduced me to Madoka. This year I bought Tutu & the first 3 discs of Utena, & the Very Soil, and now I have much frobosity & Youtube videos to peruse & process. But your subjects transcend the mere fantalk so I love to soak in the ideas of your panels.
Let me add that as a disc buyer,  the only anime I talk about are ones I re-view 50 times (a year.) So I’m so on board with the unfinished interpretation of the viewer as well as Watsonian & Doylist positionality, etc.
(gosh, I watch Barry Lyndon about once a week- since seeing the doc Room 237 about The Shining conspiracies.- I’d LOVE to hear your take on Kubrick’s stuff!)
So I’ll be (sorta) brief since I’ll semi-stalk you as my brain creases over this stuff. I envy so much your facility with these ideas and your ability to articulate these meaty concepts in a fun, stimulating, hip manner. As a panelist, your sentences are so sublime, (and when you punctuate your discourses by admitting you’re blanking on term, it’s kind of a relief!)
So ….great to bump into you (repeatedly) and you’ll hear from me (all too soon & often) and Kudos for such MAGNIFICENT output of communication.
    Ciao, Christian.

    • Wow, thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed my panels–I really hope you enjoy Tutu, Utena, and the book!
Where do you find time to watch multiple anime 50 times a year!? I can barely find time to watch one series once, unless I’m writing about it!
As for Kubrick, I’m afraid I haven’t watched very much–just 2001, I think, and it’s been a long time since I watched that.
I look forward to hearing from you again!
