[13:14] <@Sylocat> Ah yes… when we left off…
[13:15] <@Sylocat> Whoa, she shot her?
01[13:15] <Froborr> Was not expecting that.
[13:15] <Arrlaari> I’m pretty sure we heard the shot at the end of the previous episode
[13:16] <@Sylocat> I thought it was thunder
[13:16] <@Sylocat> At first
01[13:16] <Froborr> Sure, but when you only hear a shot, that usually means someone unexpected shot an unexpected target, as will be revealed next episode/after the break.
[13:17] <@Sylocat> …It’s the next day already? What happened after that on the roof?
[13:17] <@Sylocat> Well, I guess we’re about to find out
01[13:17] <Froborr> What.
[13:18] <@Sylocat> …Do we know her?
01[13:18] <Froborr> I’m not sure..?
[13:18] <Arrlaari> That’s yurizono. She’s supposed to be dead.
[13:18] <@Sylocat> Is it Yurizono?
[13:18] <Arrlaari> Same face and voice as Yurizono had.
[13:19] <@Sylocat> “Purrowr?”
[13:19] <@Sylocat> Ah, it is Yurizono!
[13:19] <@Sylocat> I didn’t recognize her at first
[13:19] <@Sylocat> What… a ghost?
[13:20] <@Sylocat> Ah, so they DID kill Sumika
[13:20] <@Sylocat> Which one was Konomi?
[13:21] <Arrlaari> Konomi must be the name of the bear Yurizono shot
[13:21] <@Sylocat> Ah, that bear
[13:22] <@Sylocat> What a twist!
[13:22] <@Sylocat> So we only thought Yurizono had killed her
[13:23] <@Sylocat> “Desire” is cruel indeed
[13:24] <@Sylocat> Was the pin important to Ginko?
01[13:25] <Froborr> I don’t think so, I think it just represents the love between Sumika and… um… main character whose name begins with K.
[13:25] <@Sylocat> Oh… so Yurizono DID kill her, it’s just that Ginko could have stopped her
[13:25] <Arrlaari> We saw Yurishiro watching Sumika’s murder at the end of a previous episode, and you two completely forgot about it.
[13:26] <@Sylocat> Well, I just thought it was presented as too big of a reveal to be as simple as “she watched it happen”
[13:27] <@Sylocat> Only, it feels that important to Ginko because she’s punishing herself
[13:27] <@Sylocat> Whoa
[13:27] <@Sylocat> Creepy eyes
[13:27] <@Sylocat> And… yikes
[13:28] <@Sylocat> Are they going to assume Kureha is the bear?
01[13:28] <Froborr> So… Yurizono killed Sumika but Ginko let it happen, then Kureha killed Yurizono, and now Yurizono is possessing Ginko to help same Kureha and probably also evil purposes of her own?
01[13:29] <Froborr> Just seeing if I’ve got this straight.
[13:29] <@Sylocat> Ahah… peeping bear
[13:29] <@Sylocat> “Please deposit 25 cents to continue.”
[13:29] <@Sylocat> Yep, they’re going to assume it’s Kureha
[13:30] <@Sylocat> I wasn’t expecting to see the subtext stated so openly
01[13:31] <Froborr> I was, because Ikuhara.
[13:31] <@Sylocat> Oh… I wondered why the voice sounded scrumbled
[13:34] <@Sylocat> Does Evil Blonde Teacher Lady think she can win?
[13:34] <@Sylocat> Whoa
01[13:34] <Froborr> That got rape-y FAST.
[13:34] <@Sylocat> Ginko to the rescue, I assume
01[13:34] <Froborr> Wait, what?
[13:34] <@Sylocat> HUH?
01[13:34] <Froborr> The invisible storm saved her!?
[13:35] <@Sylocat> The jerkass classmates stopped her?
[13:35] <@Sylocat> That was unexpected
[13:35] <@Sylocat> Dang
01[13:36] <Froborr> Well.
[13:36] <Arrlaari> Yeah, I was pretty surprised to see the Akio of this show abruptly killed off.
[13:36] <@Sylocat> I assume “Reia” was Kureha?
[13:37] <Arrlaari> But in retrospect, I shouldn’t have been, because that’s what happened in the movie
[13:37] <@Sylocat> Movie?
01[13:37] <Froborr> The Utena movie, I’m assuming.
[13:37] <@Sylocat> Ah
[13:37] <Arrlaari> The Utena movie, in which Akio dies in what I’m pretty sure is a flashback
[13:37] <@Sylocat> So… where do they go from here? There’s still, what, 3 episodes left/
01[13:38] <Froborr> I’ve actually always wondered if Touga was the intended villain of Utena, and Akio was only introduced because Touga’s VA was unavailable for the middle chunk of the show. (Which is why Touga spends that period in a fugue listening to recordings of himself in past episodes.)
01[13:38] <Froborr> Oh hey, after-credits sequence!
01[13:38] <Froborr> And yeah, looks like “Reia” was Kureha.
[13:38] <@Sylocat> I think that’s just the preview
01[13:38] <Froborr> It played out more like a stinger, but possibly…
[13:39] <Arrlaari> This show likes to go out on a twist, or at least something that looks enough like a twist to play their “what a twist” sound
01[13:39] <Froborr> Haha, true.
[13:41] <Arrlaari> Back to Yurikuma a moment, it’s notable that the Invisible Storm’s leaders have been dying throughout the show
01[13:41] <Froborr> Yeah… there’s an expression about the nail that sticks up getting the hammer that’s likely applicable there.
[13:42] <Arrlaari> With the principle dead, the leader of the Invisible Storm is the closest thing to a primary antagonist this show has, and she just attained her position this episode.
[13:43] <@Sylocat> I assume the antagonist of the last three episodes are going to be the judges
01[13:43] <Froborr> True. And ultimately, if we’ve been interpreting the themes of the show correctly, the Invisible Storm has to be the true antagonist.
01[13:43] <Froborr> Well, true, the judges as well.
01[13:43] <Froborr> Judgment, in general.
[13:43] <@Sylocat> I’m predicting some sort of redemption arc for Invisible Storm
[13:43] <@Sylocat> I’m probably wrong though
01[13:44] <Froborr> Possibly for the girls within it, but not the Storm itself.
[13:44] <@Sylocat> Well I know, not the storm itself, I’m just not sure what else to call the girls in it
01[13:44] <Froborr> Hmm, I could see a scenario where the Storm is revealed to be a pawn of the judges and the endgame is all the girls vs. the judges.
01[13:45] <Froborr> Rooting the self-hating lesbophobia the storm represents ultimately in patriarchal power structures.
[13:46] <@Sylocat> With the final plot twist that all the girls are bears and vice versa?
01[13:47] <Froborr> Would that even be a twist at this point?
[13:47] <@Sylocat> Probably not
01[13:47] <Froborr> I guess Kureha being a bear would be a little bit of a twist.
[13:48] <@Sylocat> I mean, it’d get the “BEAR-SHOCK” musical sting, but it wouldn’t really be unexpected by now
[13:40] <Arrlaari> Well, that’s a straightforward episode title
[13:40] <@Sylocat> (incidentally, looking back, I just realized that “The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows” was written by G. M. Berrow, who writes all the tie-in storybooks)
[13:40] <@Sylocat> (and by “this week’s,” I of course mean the one from two weeks ago)
01[13:41] <Froborr> Hmm, given Discord’s general personality, I’m guessing a pony take on “What About Bob?”
[13:50] <@Sylocat> “A few months?” That’s an eternity between book-sortings for Twilight
[13:50] <mere_oblivion> As someone whose wife AND sister work in libraries, I can attest the feeling is not universal.
[13:50] <@Sylocat> It’s an improvement on the Dewey Decimal system
[13:51] <@Sylocat> Ahhh-ahh-ahh-ahh-AAAAHHHH
01[13:51] <Froborr> Gah, yeah, my moms are librarians. My book sorting method HORRIFIES them.
01[13:51] <Froborr> Which is, randomly stick books anywhere they fit on the shelves.
[13:51] <mere_oblivion> Too . . . whimsical?
[13:51] <mere_oblivion> Yeah, too whimsical.
[13:51] <Arrlaari> Do libraries still use Dewey, or do they have an improvement? I recall seeing something claiming Dewey’s categories are unsatisfactory.
01[13:52] <Froborr> You don’t find what you’re looking for very often, but you usually find something more interesting anyway.
[13:52] <@Sylocat> “Not like we missed anything.”
[13:52] <mere_oblivion> Public libraries mostly use Dewey, universities use Library of Congress
[13:52] <@Sylocat> The heck?
01[13:52] <Froborr> Public libraries mostly use Dewey, research libraries mostly use Library of Congress, at least in the US.
01[13:52] <Froborr> That’s… mildly creepy.
[13:52] <@Sylocat> Oh yikes, what’s he done this time?
[13:53] <@Sylocat> He hasn’t done any brainwashing this time… that’d be way too big a backslide… but I assume Twilight is going to understandably leap to that conclusion
[13:54] <mere_oblivion> Great relatives-of-librarians think alike, Froborr.
01[13:54] <Froborr> I’ve had this happen, where you miss something the rest of your friends did and for like a week afterwards it’s nothing but inside jokes you don’t get.
[13:54] <@Sylocat> Oh, I know that feeling as well
01[13:54] <Froborr> “Rococo Froufrou.” That’s BEAUTIFUL.
[13:54] <@Sylocat> (of course, I’ve perpetrated it as well… all my Shakespeare references go right over the heads of my D&D group)
[13:54] <@Sylocat> Ouch
[13:55] <@Sylocat> What the…
[13:55] <@Sylocat> BOB ROSS!
[13:55] <mere_oblivion> Noooo!
01[13:55] <Froborr> Oh my god, that’s great.
[13:55] <@Sylocat> What would Bob Ross’s ponified name be?
01[13:56] <Froborr> Bob Hoss.
[13:56] <@Sylocat> Ah, of course
[13:56] <@Sylocat> Oh, John de Lancie…
01[13:56] <Froborr> BTW, I’d just like to express my gratitude to whoever closed captioned this video, they did a great job, and having just spent two days closed captioning re:play, I know how muhc of a pain it is.
[13:57] <@Sylocat> Ah, she assumes Discord is being insincere
[13:58] <@Sylocat> Which is understandable… it’s going to be a while before Discord earns the benefit of the doubt
01[13:58] <Froborr> Ah, this is going to be about how mundane activities can become special if you do them with the right people.
[13:59] <@Sylocat> Oh boy…
[13:59] <@Sylocat> It was a stick that Discord turned into a snake that looked like a garden hose
[14:00] <@Sylocat> Foreshadowing for the season finale
[14:00] <@Sylocat> (yes I’ve read a synopsis)
[14:00] <Arrlaari> Discord is totally trying to make Twilight jealous
01[14:00] <Froborr> So you just figured you’d fling spoilers at the rest of us?
[14:00] <@Sylocat> So is this an apology for FPK?
[14:00] <@Sylocat> Restaurant?
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Discord, just turn it red
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Ah…
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Did Discord just do a Dr. Horrible cosplay?
01[14:02] <Froborr> I think he might have.
[14:02] <Arrlaari> Discord is leading up to one thing being different, which is Twilight is here
[14:02] <@Sylocat> Yep
[14:03] <@Sylocat> Ah, so this is a story about Fear Of Missing Out.
[14:03] <mere_oblivion> Is this the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle or something about Schrodinger’s Cat? (N
[14:04] <mere_oblivion> (not that I get either of those concepts)
01[14:04] <Froborr> More like the Observer Effect. Which is related to both, but separate.
[14:04] <mere_oblivion> Thanks.
01[14:05] <Froborr> lol about the cauldron.
[14:05] <@Sylocat> Ahahah… the witch’s cauldron is just for show
[14:05] <@Sylocat> “Tushies?”
[14:06] <@Sylocat> Eww
[14:06] <@Sylocat> That’s the pony equivalent of a really off-color joke
[14:06] <mere_oblivion> This IS kind of What About Bob?
[14:07] <@Sylocat> Yep, it’s about Fear Of Missing Out
[14:08] <mere_oblivion> And someone you can’t stand winning over the people you feel closest to.
[14:09] <@Sylocat> …The heck?
[14:10] <@Sylocat> ORANGE you’ve glad I’ve changed
[14:10] <@Sylocat> This is an unusually complex moral
[14:11] <@Sylocat> Was his fang always backwards?
[14:11] <@Sylocat> But he WAS there
[14:11] <@Sylocat> Wow… that was a dense one
01[14:11] <Froborr> Yeah. Huh.
[14:12] <mere_oblivion> I think he was there but not present, if you know what i mean.
[14:12] <@Sylocat> True
[14:12] <@Sylocat> I mean, there was a whole lot of layers to the moral of this one
[14:12] <Arrlaari> de Lancie voiced a character in the last Starcraft 2 campaign. It took me 3 minutes to recognize him and I’m pretty sure 2 of them were because the character wasn’t Q.
[14:13] <Arrlaari> Also: Discord arrived only after the sequence where Twilight was trying to get them to drink the potion to break the spell he didn’t put them under.
[14:13] <@Sylocat> It was like several different lessons packed into one, and only one felt the need to be SPELLed out
01[14:13] <Froborr> *groans*
[14:13] <@Sylocat> (ORANGE you angry I made that joke)
[14:13] <mere_oblivion> Yes, actually.
[14:14] <@Sylocat> Wow, I really AM turning into my dad
[14:14] <@Sylocat> (shots fired)
[14:14] <mere_oblivion> Sad, sad.
[14:14] <Arrlaari> I bet Froborr and mere_oblivion think you’re a real snake right about now
[14:14] <mere_oblivion> I fear so.
[14:16] <@Sylocat> I like how ambiguous it was in spots, both to emulate the sensation and to let the audience’s imagination fill in the blanks
[14:17] <Arrlaari> I like how Discord clearly did plan to teach Twilight a Friendship Lesson in order to obtain the superior sensation of teaching the Princess of Friendship about friendship
[14:17] <@Sylocat> And yet it genuinely was a lesson she needed to learn, but he was still a total jerk about it, and he got called out on that
[14:18] <Arrlaari> It’s consistent with the core motivation of the Discord/Q character: To show everyone how superior he is
[14:19] <@Sylocat> There was a genuine moral complexity to this one, that I really appreciated
[14:19] <mere_oblivion> And it kept us guessing as to what it would be about.
01[14:20] <Froborr> Yep to both.
[14:22] <Arrlaari> I guessed “Discord is trying to make Twilight jealous” from the moment he gave her The Look at the end of that first conversation
[14:22] <@Sylocat> I assumed it was his social obliviousness… shows how little I’ve learned
[14:25] <Arrlaari> At first I was expecting the episode to be about Discord being unable to understand how Twilight could like sorting book
[14:25] <Arrlaari> It is notable that a Discord episode opens with reminding us that Twilight is the sort of person who resorts a library to relax
[14:32] <@Sylocat> Dang, there’s so much to say about this one I can’t think of a single thing to say about it
[14:33] <Arrlaari> I haven’t heard of “What about Bob”
[14:34] <@Sylocat> I’ve heard of it but haven’t seen it
01[14:35] <Froborr> It ended up not having a whole lot to do with this episode.
[14:35] <@Sylocat> Well, it had to do with the start of it, but not the end
01[14:35] <Froborr> Yeah.
[14:38] <mere_oblivion> I thought it had to do with this one in that Twilight had to watch while someone she really doesn’t like got befriended by the ponies she does like, which is what the Richard Dreyfus character goes through.
01[14:39] <Froborr> Yeah, that’s the main resemblance.
01[14:39] <Froborr> I wonder if they had more in common in an earlier draft?
[14:42] <@Sylocat> This one was written by Neal Dusedau, whose previous credit was Princess Spike
[14:42] <@Sylocat> (though Thiessen and Miller got the story credit for Princess Spike)
[14:43] <@Sylocat> Incidentally I just realized that “The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows” was written by G.M. Berrow, who does all those storybooks and is also writing the Daring Do tie-in novels
[14:46] <@Sylocat> Well… are those the final thoughts?
[14:46] <mere_oblivion> Well, I guess I’m heading back to the non-equine, or at least less equine, world. Oh, final thoughts. Remarkable episode, I thought.
[14:47] <mere_oblivion> Funny and touching in an unusual way.
01[14:48] <Froborr> Yeah, pretty good ep. This season’s running strong, overall.
[14:48] <@Sylocat> Indeed ’tis
