[14:00] <Sylocat> She has the weirdest dream sequences
[14:00] <Sylocat> Project M? She’s a Smash Bros. fan?
[14:02] <Sylocat> We still haven’t met the pink-haired person, right?
01[14:02] <Froborr> We still haven’t seen the redhead with the gun or the woman with pink hair, have we?
01[14:02] <Froborr> lol, great minds
[14:02] <Sylocat> And fools
[14:02] <Arrlaari> ad
[14:02] <Sylocat> Ads, of course
01[14:02] <Froborr> Ah, right.
01[14:02] <Froborr> Hulu still isn’t working for me, so I don’t have any.
[14:03] <Arrlaari> Isn’t the redhead’s “gun” the fancy slingshot we saw?
01[14:04] <Froborr> Is it? Oh wait, is she the leader of the League of Mostly Not Evil Exes?
[14:04] <JeffersonLeeEng> ads
[14:04] <Sylocat> …Ads still going?
[14:04] <JeffersonLeeEng> yep
[14:05] <JeffersonLeeEng> I got a long ass JG Wentworth
[14:05] <Arrlaari> paused after ads
[14:06] <JeffersonLeeEng> mmm…butterfinger
[14:06] <Arrlaari> I recently read an article claiming that total advertising spending in the United States has barely deviated from 2% of GDP for a startlingly long time
[14:07] <JeffersonLeeEng> Oh, we’re back
[14:07] <Sylocat> Everyone back?
01[14:07] <Froborr> Never left. =P
[14:07] <Sylocat> Okay… click
[14:07] <Sylocat> Ouch… she has amnesia?
[14:07] <JeffersonLeeEng> Hmmm
[14:07] <Sylocat> What was that on the floor?
[14:08] <JeffersonLeeEng> a wrapper?
[14:08] <Arrlaari> The thing from the slingshot
01[14:08] <Froborr> It looked burned, but had the penguin logo.
[14:08] <JeffersonLeeEng> boiled chestnuts
01[14:08] <Froborr> The subway girls were playing with bear traps.
01[14:08] <Froborr> Foreshadowing for the inevitable Yurikuma crossover?
[14:08] <Sylocat> I’ve heard of roasted chestnuts, but not boiled chestnuts
[14:09] <Sylocat> Oh, Ringo
[14:10] <Sylocat> Why is Blue Oniichan putting up with this again?
[14:10] <Sylocat> And what were those ants carrying, and what does it symbolize?
[14:10] <Arrlaari> The bargain
01[14:10] <Froborr> To get the diary.
01[14:10] <Froborr> The ants were carrying the chestnuts.
[14:10] <Sylocat> Oh… right
01[14:11] <Froborr> Which kinda looked more like hazelnuts? Weird.
[14:11] <Sylocat> SNIPER!
[14:11] <JeffersonLeeEng> again!
[14:12] <JeffersonLeeEng> girlie mag
[14:12] <Sylocat> The penguin reading a dirty magazine
[14:12] <Arrlaari> Why didn’t red brother do anything?
[14:12] <Sylocat> Surely at least SOME of this will be explained at some point, right?
01[14:13] <Froborr> WTF, are those things like the penguin hat?
[14:13] <Sylocat> Why is Red Oniichan just standing there like an idiot? Did time start telescoping?
01[14:13] <Froborr> What. The. Hell.
[14:13] <JeffersonLeeEng> ad
[14:13] <Sylocat> WHAT must be crushed at once?
[14:13] <Arrlaari> ad
[14:13] <Sylocat> Ad here too
01[14:14] <Froborr> Huh, on mine the line was translated as HE will be crushed soon.
[14:14] <Arrlaari> Hm. I suspect the Hulu subs are more accurate.
[14:14] <Sylocat> Ah… a subtitle spoiler…?
01[14:14] <Froborr> Probably, yes.
[14:15] <Sylocat> Ads over, here
[14:15] <Arrlaari> I still have 70 seconds
[14:15] <JeffersonLeeEng> no thank you state farm
[14:15] <JeffersonLeeEng> 25 secs
01[14:15] <Froborr> So curly red is clearly connected somehow wiht the penguins… but “connected” could as easily mean “fighting against” as “working with.”
[14:16] <Arrlaari> “this must be crushed at once” has been Slingshot Sniper’s catchphrase
01[14:16] <Froborr> Ooh, Slingshot Sniper, I like that name for her.
[14:16] <JeffersonLeeEng> back
[14:16] <Arrlaari> paused after ads.
[14:16] <Sylocat> (I’ve named the brothers “Red Oniichan” and “Blue Oniichan”)
[14:17] <Sylocat> Okay… click
[14:17] <JeffersonLeeEng> mayo
[14:17] <Sylocat> What in the name of…
[14:18] <Sylocat> So she’s gone to outright hallucinations now
[14:18] <Sylocat> Ah… she’s sick
[14:18] <Sylocat> Whoa
[14:19] <Sylocat> So this is the source of Ringo’s issues
[14:19] <JeffersonLeeEng> I’m a moray.
[14:20] <Sylocat> Aww
[14:20] <Sylocat> WHAT
[14:20] <Sylocat> Wait, WHAT
[14:21] <JeffersonLeeEng> What?
[14:21] <Arrlaari> Project M
[14:21] <Sylocat> I don’t…
[14:22] <JeffersonLeeEng> Schrodinger’s Cat
[14:22] <Sylocat> So THIS is why she’s so fixated on him?
[14:23] <Sylocat> I was not expecting that…
[14:24] <Arrlaari> ad
[14:24] <Sylocat> Ah, so here’s where Blue Oniichan learns the truth
[14:24] <JeffersonLeeEng> more ads
[14:24] <Sylocat> Ad
[14:24] <Sylocat> Hi dad, BTW
01[14:25] <Froborr> So… is Project M her quest to… resurrect Momoka? Become Momoka?
[14:25] <Sylocat> My money’s on “Become.”
01[14:25] <Froborr> Also, who wants to lay odds that hte spirit in the penguinhat is Momoka?
[14:25] <Sylocat> She did say her family wouldn’t be broken up if she became Momoka
01[14:25] <Froborr> Ah yes, good point.
[14:25] <Sylocat> Ooh, that actually makes sense! The hat is Momoka, and she wants the diary to… resurrect herself or something
[14:26] <Arrlaari> Her future diary was written by Momoka, or at least she believes that, and the diary says that once what’s written in it becomes true, what Momoka cared about will “become eternal”
[14:26] <JeffersonLeeEng> back
[14:26] <Sylocat> Paused after ads
[14:26] <Arrlaari> paused after ads
[14:27] <Sylocat> Okay… click
01[14:27] <Froborr> So her stalking is about trying to play out the relationship she imagines Momoka and the teacher would’ve had?
[14:27] <Sylocat> This… puts the preceding episodes in a bizarre new light
01[14:27] <Froborr> Whoa, that trainsformation sequence came out of freakin NOWHERE.
[14:28] <Sylocat> So much of this reminds me of Summer Wars
01[14:28] <Froborr> Yeah, the CG elements are very similar. Wonder if they were done by the same team?
[14:29] <Sylocat> Oh yikes
[14:29] <Sylocat> The hat wants to set Blue Oniichan up with Ringo?
01[14:29] <Froborr> Hmm… did penguinhat just use outdated/childish slang?
01[14:29] <Froborr> That’s further evidence for being a ghost from years prior.
[14:30] <JeffersonLeeEng> she suck out
[14:30] <JeffersonLeeEng> snuck
[14:30] <Sylocat> Ringo needs help…
[14:31] <JeffersonLeeEng> she has a hot burner under the building?
[14:31] <Sylocat> Where IS she right now?
01[14:31] <Froborr> Huh, the Japanese for “pink” is apparently “pink.”
[14:31] <JeffersonLeeEng> pinku
01[14:32] <Froborr> Wait, WHAT?
[14:32] <JeffersonLeeEng> red-haired girl
01[14:32] <Froborr> Slingshot Sniper has a penguin? And is also working on a Project M?
[14:32] <Sylocat> So SlingSniper has a penguin? And a dark gray one, for extra evil power
01[14:33] <Froborr> I was more drawn to the Evil Eyebrows on the penguin, but yeah. Clearly evil penguin.
[14:33] <Sylocat> This show may finally be getting weirder than Yurikuma
[14:33] <Arrlaari> That Penguin has been in the OP from the beginning
[14:34] <JeffersonLeeEng> dear future
01[14:34] <Froborr> So that was a rather revelatory episode. Wow.
[14:35] <Sylocat> Indeed
[14:36] <JeffersonLeeEng> pony time?
[14:36] <Sylocat> I mean… I would have appreciated knowing this sooner, but… maybe the point was to bait me into thinking one thing and then… I dunno
[14:36] <Sylocat> We start in, say, 4 minutes?
01[14:37] <Froborr> Sounds good.
[14:37] <Sylocat> At 11:40/1:40/2:40, depending on time zone
[14:37] <Sylocat> Incidentally, I went on reddit and saw just a couple of screenshots from today’s episode and thought, “Oh, dad is going to love this one,” so I invited him
[14:38] <mere_oblivion> And here he is to prove it.
[14:39] <Sylocat> Okay… 1 minute…
[14:39] <Sylocat> (the hotel’s connection is slow, but at least it’s stable, so I don’t get kicked off every 5 minutes)
[14:40] <Sylocat> Click
01[14:40] <Froborr> Wait, is this continuign straight off the last one?
[14:40] <Sylocat> Oh! Sassy Saddles is a regular character now?
[14:40] <Sylocat> “Shadow Spade,” of course
01[14:40] <Froborr> Oooh, pony noir?
[14:40] <Sylocat> So, dad, this character is Rarity’s new assistant, who was introduced last episode
[14:41] <Sylocat> Ouch… Rainbow Dash makes an entrance
[14:41] <mere_oblivion> Thanks for the clue, Sylo.
[14:41] <Sylocat> It’s surprising since this show doesn’t deal much in continuity (except when M.A. Larson is writing)
[14:41] <mere_oblivion> (I was wondering, actually, who she was.)
[14:42] <Sylocat> Ah…
[14:42] <Arrlaari> M.A. Larson
[14:42] <Arrlaari> in the credit
[14:42] <Sylocat> Wait, FOUR people listedo n the story credit, one of whom is Larson
01[14:42] <Froborr> Holy crap, that’s a long list of writing credits.
01[14:42] <Froborr> That’s… rarely a good sign, unless it’s an anthology episode.
[14:42] <Sylocat> (apparently Larson is story editor this season, since McCarthy has been promoted to running the Hub’s entireanimation thing or something)
[14:42] <JeffersonLeeEng> yeah…too many writers
[14:43] <JeffersonLeeEng> wonderbolts dinner
[14:43] <mere_oblivion> Gosh, a male character who’s a driveling idiot!
[14:43] <JeffersonLeeEng> heh
[14:44] <Sylocat> Ahahah…
[14:45] <Sylocat> And he talks like a Noir detective (or like Gummy)
[14:45] <Sylocat> Rainbow Dash, being modest?
[14:45] <Sylocat> How does THAT happen?
[14:46] <Sylocat> Ahahah… now they’re giving us a RariDash tease
[14:46] <Sylocat> (I still prefer RariJack)
[14:46] <JeffersonLeeEng> heh
[14:47] <Sylocat> A callback to “Ohmygoshohmygosh”
[14:48] <Sylocat> Ah, so the letter was a fake
[14:48] <Sylocat> Uh oh… Rainbow Dash is going to get blamed?
[14:48] <Sylocat> Oh dear… and now Rarity has to prove her innocence?
[14:48] <mere_oblivion> It’s a frame!
[14:48] <JeffersonLeeEng> who sent the note?
01[14:49] <Froborr> Ah, it’s the Murder She Wrote approach.
[14:49] <Arrlaari> Prediction: Old veteran sent the note to frame Rainbow Dash
01[14:49] <Froborr> Yeah, probably.
[14:49] <mere_oblivion> So he’s an evil idiot instead of just an arrogant one.
01[14:50] <Froborr> YES
[14:50] <Sylocat> But whereas Twilight emulated Sherlock Holmes, Rarity goes the Noir approach
01[14:50] <Froborr> Well of course. Noir is a subgenre of melodrama.
[14:51] <Sylocat> Why isn’t she making more ridiculous metaphors in her inner monologue?
[14:52] <JeffersonLeeEng> velvet rope
[14:52] <Sylocat> AHAHAHAH
01[14:52] <Froborr> OH MY GOD
01[14:53] <Froborr> Rarity is the BEST cosplayer.
[14:53] <Sylocat> Huh… I’m surprised they didn’t consult Pinkie Pie to identify the baker
[14:54] <JeffersonLeeEng> cake
[14:54] <Sylocat> Ah, it’s in Canterlot, and Pinkie’s territory is Ponyville
[14:55] <mere_oblivion> Did they actually get Angela Lansbury for this voice?
[14:55] <Sylocat> But Rainbow Dash wouldn’t need to knock out the guards to access the wing, like it was established
[14:55] <Arrlaari> That’s important because RD wouldn’t throw a fit over staining a scarf
01[14:55] <Froborr> I don’t think that’s Angela Lansbury, no.
[14:56] <Sylocat> It just sounds like her
[14:56] <mere_oblivion> Okay, Sylocat, there’s a terrible metaphor 4 U. (Ducks in a row.)
[14:56] <Sylocat> Eeyup
[14:58] <Sylocat> Oh, so the moral is, everyone can apply their unique skills to problem-solving
[14:59] <mere_oblivion> Polite but disingenuous laugh–this show is majorly advanced.
[14:59] <JeffersonLeeEng> lAST BROCCOLI
[14:59] <Sylocat> Indeed… though it’s actualy more common in cartoons since it’s easier to convey with voice acting than with expressions
[15:01] <mere_oblivion> Come on, Wind, it’s Ponytown? (No. Sorry. No.)
[15:01] <Sylocat> And they even do the noir theme over the credits!
01[15:01] <Froborr> And one final YES for the change to ending credits theme.
01[15:01] <Froborr> That was a lot of fun!
[15:02] <mere_oblivion> I’ll say–thanks for the 11th-hour call, Sylocat.
[15:02] <Sylocat> Wait, Nicole Oliver also did the Angela Lansbury sound-alike!
[15:02] <Sylocat> That was epic
[15:02] <Arrlaari> So, they overlayed Noir aesthetic, but structurally that was a Sherlock Holmes plot
[15:02] <Arrlaari> Kind of necessary, since noir plots involve a lot of at least credible threat of violence
[15:03] <mere_oblivion> It was, wasn’t it? Well, probably less of a stretch to . . . wait, Arrlaari just said what i was going to.
[15:03] <Sylocat> There’s some comparisons to be made with that nonsense Conan Doyle wrote about why Holmes doesn’t know that the Earth revolves around the Sun
[15:03] <mere_oblivion> Expand on this hypothesis, please.
[15:04] <Sylocat> See, Rarity’s knowledge of fashion, decor and high society proved to be the key, whereas Holmes boasts about deleting useless knowledge (like about things like astronomy) from his memory to make room
[15:04] <mere_oblivion> Oh. Okay. Yeah.
01[15:04] <Froborr> It mostly made me think of Murder She Wrote–the “visit with a friend turns into mystery when friend is falsely accused thing,” the combination of Holmes-style close observation and deduction with noir-ish character dynamics…
[15:04] <Arrlaari> Fun fact: Newtonian motion means that whether or not the Earth revolves around the Sun depends on an arbitrary choice of reference point
[15:05] <Sylocat> (incidentally, the best adaptation of that scene was Elementary, because in that show, when Holmes says that schpiel about deleting useless knowledge from his mental hard drive, Watson(Lucy Liu) looks at him and says, “That’s not even how the brain works!”
[15:05] <Sylocat> Which is true
[15:05] <mere_oblivion> Man, I’m learning way too much for one half-hour.
[15:06] <mere_oblivion> So: no matter how many 1930’s song lyrics I keep adding to my brain, they’re not an excuse for losing the car keys?
01[15:06] <Froborr> There’s not actually any known upper limit for the human memory.
[15:07] <Arrlaari> You lose the car keys because you don’t always put them in the same place, and repetition is a large part of promoting recall from short to long term memory
01[15:07] <Froborr> Presumably there IS one, but we don’t actually understand how the brain works well enough to figure out what it is.
[15:07] <mere_oblivion> I feel . . . less ancient now.
[15:07] <Sylocat> Heck, I’d lose the car keys and my wallet all the time if I didn’t always keep them in the exact same place
[15:08] <Arrlaari> Another thing is association – at least one multi-time Jeapordy! contestent used association based mnemonics when studying for the show.
01[15:08] <Froborr> Especially since we do (in wildly inappropriate computer terms) a RIDICULOUS amount of data compression, to the point that most of each memory is actually lost and has to be reconstructed each time it’s recalled.
[15:09] <mere_oblivion> Closely related to all this are Joshua Foer’s MOONWALKING WITH EINSTEIN, and Wm Alexander’s FLIRTING WITH FRENCH, two excellent recent books.
[15:10] <mere_oblivion> The problem for me starts after I take them out of their customary place so I can, you know, actually drive the car.
[15:10] <Sylocat> True
[15:13] <Sylocat> Of course, the one memory that never has to be reconstructed is the jingle from the gum commercial
[15:14] <mere_oblivion> Horrifyingly true.
[15:15] <Sylocat> Well… any further thoughts?
[15:15] <mere_oblivion> Anything further, father? That can’t be right, shouldn’t it be Anything father, further?
[15:16] <Arrlaari> That the old veteran would do something sneaky to try to knock out Rainbow Dash was a little to obvious
[15:16] <Arrlaari> Like, I predicted as soon as I noticed the conversation was focused on the Bolts saying RD would beat his record while RD demurred
[15:17] <mere_oblivion> Yeah, but it didn’t bother me this time around. Maybe the noir thing made me extra-willing to cut them some slack.
[15:18] <Sylocat> It wasn’t always that big of a mystery in actual noir; it was often more about whydunnit than whodunnit
[15:22] <mere_oblivion> Well, I’m off to investigate the truthiness of that particular statement. “See” you all next week, I hope.

One thought on “Penguindrum 6 and MLPFIM S5E14 Liveblog Chat Thingy!

  1. So, the last two weeks have been, frankly, kind of insane and I haven’t had very much time to watch any anime, let alone take notes (thus doubling the amount of time spent per episode). Even these notes took two days longer than originally planned (Mostly because I fell asleep multiple times throughout the episode). You should all feel sympathy for anyone who has to go through any kind of clinicals. On the upside, I can now afford to back some Patreons! I wonder who I’ll choose…
00:37 Project M does not sound like anything good.
02:25 So the Ex-Girlfriend Union boss doesn’t remember Kanba.
    02:40 Slingshot ball
03:12 Today’s Slogan “Watch out for the painful trap by your feet”
03:18 Meanwhile, Ringo wants no part of this rigmarole
03:35 She wants no part because she has her won rigmarole to carry out.
04:00 And now Shouma’s been roped in to helping with “Project M”.
04:22 Ringo still talking to stuffed animals. Is this a normal thing for Japanese high school students, or is she not as mature as one would expect a person of her age to be?
05:18 Ah, that’s why Shouma’s helping her. Access to the diary.
06:19 Good grief, does the slingshot have a sniper mode?
    06:25 It does.
08:17 So did no one think to remove the balls attached to these girl’s foreheads?
08:28 Also, PingGroup logo. Not suspicious at all.
09:05 It strikes me, if RIngo moves out, won’t her mom notice?
09:27 Yeah, Ringo fainting and everything, plot twist. Probable hilarious misunderstandings. Whatever. My question is: How can anyone actually eat mayonnaise? Every time I see it, it just looks wrong somehow. Like it’s not actually food.
09:41 Ringo… This relationship with Taubiki is not healthy. For either of you.
    09:52 Oh thank goodness, it’s Ringo’s mom.
    10:07 Mom is broken.
    10:32 Who’s Momoka?
10:41 Was Momoka another daughter? Did Ringo have a sister? (Apparently so. Why doens’t Ringo mention/remember her?)
11:06 “Five years ago”. Was there a big event in 1994 that could potentially kill a young girl, or is this generic tragic backstory?
11:26 So, stylized, yes, but I think we know now why Ringo’s parents are divorced.
12:10 That is the sort of thing a child would come up with. Could Project M be “Momka” instead of “Marriage”? In which case, the diary was Momoka’s, and Ringo is re-enacting it to try and become her sister. Still doesn’t explain how the diary knew about other things though…
12:36 Okay, so Tabuki and Momoka were childhood friends/love interests then? The above theory is gaining weight.
14:11 Great. Schrodinger’s Cat. Because that’s not overused and misunderstood from its original purpose.
14:41 Okay, so the diary WAS Momoka’s.
14:45 And the notebook underneath it: [D]ETH NOTE. That’s a scary thought.
15:11 Ringo’s mom knows more than she’s letting on here.
15:26 And she also fundamentally misunderstands what’s going on. To be fair, the plot of this series does not seem to be immediately evident.
15:40 And #2 finds more mayonnaise. Joy.
16:12 So Momoka’s existence isn’t meant to be hidden, it’s just never come up before? Okay.
    16:51 YAY! Survival Strategy!
19:09 Okay, so the slingshot shoots amnesia balls? That’s useful.
19:46 Ringo, I think I understand what you’re trying to do here, and I’m fairly certain it’s not going to work. Unless it does. This is an Ikuhara show, after all.
20:53 Did she have that sign made custom, or is there a shop that sells them ready-made? I’m asking for a friend.
    21:37 Slingshot Juri has a higher-up, and a plan.
21:45 And she’s got a Project M too. Probably not the same one as Ringo.
21:47 Hey! It’s the fourth penguin!
