[13:18] <@Sylocat> Ah… so here you are
[13:19] <Arrlaari> We’re about to start the credits
01[13:19] <Froborr> So sorry!
01[13:19] <Froborr> I forgot that it was at 1!
[13:19] <@Sylocat> Well, we’d barely gotten started
[13:19] <Arrlaari> There’s an ad break at the start of the credits this time
[13:19] <@Sylocat> We’re both paused at the start of the opening credits
[13:19] <Arrlaari> We can pause at the end of it for you?
01[13:19] <Froborr> Please do. I’ll let you know when I get to the end of the credits.
[13:19] <@Sylocat> So… shouldn’t take you too long to catch up
[13:19] <@Sylocat> Okay then
[13:21] <Arrlaari> Paused on title card
01[13:22] <Froborr> Agh, the cold open was clearly building up to the credits sogn and then this ad cut in.
[13:22] <@Sylocat> Yeah… figures this would be the ONE episode where crunchyroll puts the ad break before the credits instead of after
01[13:23] <Froborr> Blargh, and it’s a three-ad break, too.
[13:23] <Arrlaari> I’m guessing that Crunchy uses some kind of algorithm to place ads and it’s not very good
01[13:24] <Froborr> Nearing the end of the credits, get ready to hit play.
01[13:24] <Froborr> Click
[13:25] <@Sylocat> I want Mercury’s goggles
01[13:25] <Froborr> They’re up their with Samus’ scan visor, yeah.
01[13:25] <Froborr> *htere
01[13:25] <Froborr> *there
[13:26] <@Sylocat> Didn’t Pluto see Chibi-Usa’s new Evil Form?
01[13:26] <Froborr> I can’t type today, apparently.
01[13:26] <Froborr> I don’t recall, but I dont think she did?
[13:26] <Arrlaari> I don’t think anyone has clearly seen her
[13:26] <@Sylocat> I could have sworn she was right there
[13:26] <Arrlaari> The whole team saw a “shadow” floating around Wiseman
01[13:26] <Froborr> Can’t have been, she doesn’t leave the gate.
01[13:26] <Froborr> Until now, I guess.
[13:26] <@Sylocat> Uh oh, the Luna Head thing
[13:27] <@Sylocat> Now what?
01[13:27] <Froborr> I see their usefulness to Wiseman is over.
[13:27] <@Sylocat> Ah, so Wiseman finally betrayed them
01[13:27] <Froborr> Oh, or the rest of the planet’s been trapped.
01[13:28] <Froborr> *trashed
01[13:28] <Froborr> Or both.
[13:28] <@Sylocat> Ah, so their usefulness ISN’T over… yet
[13:29] <@Sylocat> Ah, an Aether Battleground, like in every FF game
[13:29] <@Sylocat> Ah yes, he calls her “Rabbit”
[13:29] <Arrlaari> Nobody is questioning that this rock is a castle?
01[13:30] <Froborr> I was kind of assuming the castle was inside the rock? But it’s looking like no.
[13:30] <@Sylocat> So he’s mind-whammying them?
[13:30] <@Sylocat> Why didn’t he just do that with Rubeus?
01[13:31] <Froborr> It looks like he had to catch them off-guard/injured first?
[13:31] <@Sylocat> Good point
[13:32] <@Sylocat> Ah, so Demande’s still snarky even when he’s mind-wiped
[13:32] <Arrlaari> It might be because they’re in Wiseman’s “castle” that he was able to pull that move
[13:32] <@Sylocat> He’s actually become better at manipulating people than he was before
[13:33] <@Sylocat> “The one I love,” she says
01[13:33] <Froborr> Ew, that’s your DAD.
[13:33] <@Sylocat> Oh, I read up on Chibi-Usa… she’s even creepier in the manga
[13:33] <@Sylocat> She has, like, the most blatant Electra Complex ever
01[13:33] <Froborr> ew ew ew ew
01[13:33] <Froborr> The timing on you saying that
[13:33] <@Sylocat> NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE
01[13:33] <Froborr> ad
[13:33] <Arrlaari> ad
01[13:34] <Froborr> So, I’m guessing that just established that she’s NOT actually worse in the manga?
[13:34] <@Sylocat> Well, this also happens in the manga
01[13:34] <Froborr> At least I HOPE she’s not worse in the manga, because holy fuck.
[13:34] <Arrlaari> Hey Sylocat, remember when you correctly recalled that Chibi-Usa is Usagi’s future daughter and thought you were misremembering because it would make the way she was introduced too creepy?
[13:34] <@Sylocat> I know… silly me
[13:35] <@Sylocat> I didn’t know that this happened in the manga then
[13:35] <@Sylocat> I read about it on io9 later on
[13:35] <Arrlaari> Ad over
01[13:35] <Froborr> Still going for me.
[13:35] <@Sylocat> They scanned in that image from the manga, sans context
01[13:35] <Froborr> back
[13:36] <@Sylocat> The heck?
[13:36] <@Sylocat> Where is she?
[13:36] <@Sylocat> Oh, this is a creepy illusion
01[13:36] <Froborr> I’m guessing they took her home when she fainted and that’s the cover story?
[13:37] <@Sylocat> Ah… I thought it was Wiseman conjuring this as an illusion
01[13:37] <Froborr> Oh. Nope.
01[13:37] <Froborr> Or yes?
01[13:37] <Froborr> Now I’m confused.
[13:37] <Arrlaari> That was confusing
[13:37] <@Sylocat> This is weird
[13:38] <@Sylocat> If this was Wiseman’s doing, they’d be telling her to stay put and not worry about it
01[13:38] <Froborr> MEANWHILE, IN THE FUTURE
[13:38] <@Sylocat> So maybe it’s actually happening?
[13:39] <@Sylocat> Is he going to make himself useful and snap his past self out of it
[13:39] <@Sylocat> No, of course not
[13:39] <Arrlaari> Future Endymion was basically praying to his wife like she’s a goddess
[13:39] <@Sylocat> D’aww… I do like Diana
[13:40] <@Sylocat> Uh oh
[13:40] <@Sylocat> Pluto’s summoning them back?
[13:40] <@Sylocat> Ooh, the music is too dark for htat
[13:41] <@Sylocat> Or… wait
01[13:41] <Froborr> Maybe Chibi-Usa attacked Pluto?
[13:41] <Arrlaari> I think the distortion was caused by whatever motivated Pluto to send the key
[13:41] <@Sylocat> So the two time periods are flowing concurrently now
[13:41] <Arrlaari> Rather than being caused by the key being trapped
01[13:41] <Froborr> We haven’t had a transformation sequence in a while, have we?
[13:42] <@Sylocat> Good point, we haven’t
01[13:42] <Froborr> Are there pink streaks in her hair?
[13:42] <Arrlaari> Didn’t they play it last episode when she got transform power back?
[13:42] <@Sylocat> I never noticed the pink streaks before
[13:42] <@Sylocat> They might be a trick of the light though
01[13:43] <Froborr> Man, the episode must have run short.
01[13:43] <Froborr> Or over budget.
[13:43] <@Sylocat> Yeah…
[13:43] <@Sylocat> The full extended transformation sequences
[13:43] <@Sylocat> They had to fill some space here
[13:44] <@Sylocat> (I doubt budget is that big an issue when adapting a property as hot as this one)
[13:44] <@Sylocat> Whoa
[13:44] <@Sylocat> Oh jeez
[13:45] <@Sylocat> She flirted with this version of her dad too, because of course she did
01[13:45] <Froborr> Offensive teleporting ftw!
[13:46] <@Sylocat> We already know the palace discriminates, since it allowed Venus to enter
[13:46] <Arrlaari> ad
[13:46] <@Sylocat> Well… that happened
01[13:46] <Froborr> Likewise, but it’s the end of the ep anyway.
01[13:47] <Froborr> Yeah.
[13:47] <@Sylocat> So… to recap, they decided to leave in Chibi-Usa’s ultra-creepy lust for her past dad
01[13:48] <Froborr> I like that the mindwammied characters keep their personalities: Chibi-Usa is self-centered and possessive, Diamande is snarky, Endymion is a cipher.
[13:48] <Arrlaari> Just now Chibi-Usa had a line where she says the Silver Millenium treated her like a nuisance
01[13:49] <Froborr> Well, she’s perpetually a small child. That is pretty annoying.
01[13:49] <Froborr> So it doesn’t surprise me.
[13:49] <@Sylocat> Indeed
[13:50] <@Sylocat> Well… the NOPE NOPE NOPE-ness of Chibi-Usa’s character aside, I’m still really liking this arc
01[13:50] <Froborr> Yeah, I’m in much the same place.
[13:50] <Arrlaari> In the 90’s anime Black Lady was mostly about Wiseman convincing Chibi-Usa that she wasn’t loved and the creepy crush on her dad didn’t figure into it (it was still present before she became Black Lady)
01[13:51] <Froborr> That element is SUPER NOPE, but stil not as bad as Tuxedo Mask’s lust for unconscious girls.
01[13:51] <Froborr> And the story of this arc is a lot more interesting than the last one.
[13:52] <@Sylocat> I remember hating this arc of the 90s anime because the villains seemed totally random and made no sense… this version actually gives them motivations
01[13:52] <Froborr> See, that makes sense to me. Feelings of inadequacy, that her parents see her as a disappointment–that would be the logical thing to try as a psychological attack on her.
01[13:53] <Froborr> Because, again, perpetually stuck as a small child.
[13:53] <Arrlaari> That’s true, the 90’s anime just told us that the Black Moon tribe had been exiled to Nemesis and gave us no idea why. I got the impression that the Black Moon team were descendents of the people who had actually been exiled
[13:53] <@Sylocat> I think Wiseman’s mind-control (in this version at least) doesn’t really change who the victims ARE, it just brings out the worst traits that are already inside them
[13:53] <@Sylocat> Which is the most effective and reliable type of mind control
01[13:53] <Froborr> I don’t think it even goes that far–I think it just tacks loyalty to Wiseman onto the existing person.
[13:53] <Arrlaari> The 90’s anime also did not tell us when Chibi-Usa was born or that she had remained a child for an unusually long time
[13:54] <@Sylocat> Well, I gotta get to rehearsal
[13:54] <@Sylocat> Later all
01[13:54] <Froborr> I wonder if Wiseman in Xenogears is a reference to this, or if they’re both references to the same thing, or if it’s just a coincidence…
01[13:54] <Froborr> Later!
[13:55] <Arrlaari> If the timing is right I would expect Xenogears to be referring to this. Sailor Moon was and remains A Big Deal.
01[13:55] <Froborr> *nods*
01[13:55] <Froborr> Xenogears was heavily influenced by NGE, so I suspect the timing is right to be influenced by Sailor Moon as well.
[13:56] <Arrlaari> Even if Sailor Moon is referring to this, it’d be like how DnD riffed on Smaug and then everyone else riffed on DnD’s riff
[13:56] <Arrlaari> Referring to something with Wiseman, I mean
01[13:56] <Froborr> *nods*
01[13:57] <Froborr> I mean, all the XG Wiseman really has in common with SMC’s Wiseman is that they wear cloaks to hide the fact that they’re someone some of the other characters would recognize.
01[13:57] <Froborr> It’s just such an odd name, though.
01[13:57] <Froborr> XG was in development from ’95 to ’98, I believe.
01[13:58] <Froborr> So I think the timing works.
[13:59] <Arrlaari> Also, at this point I’m confident that Saphir and Demande are not going to have at all the same arcs that they did in the 90’s anime
01[13:59] <Froborr> *nods*
01[14:00] <Froborr> Okay.
[14:00] <Arrlaari> Because this Demande and Saphir have a reactionary political ideology motivating him where 90’s Demande had an unrequited crush and toxic ideas about romance and Saphir was just trying to help his brother
01[14:01] <Froborr> I mean, Demande still has the unrequited crush and toxic ideas about romance.
01[14:01] <Froborr> He just ALSO has reactionary political ideology.
[14:01] <Arrlaari> I could wait longer to tell you how 90’s Demande and Saphir turned out, or I could bring it up now
01[14:01] <Froborr> I’d say wait until their arc finishes in SMC.
[14:02] <Arrlaari> Ok.
01[14:02] <Froborr> Any other final thoughts?
01[14:03] <Froborr> Also, was there anything interesting said while you guys watched the cold open/credits before I got here?
[14:03] <Arrlaari> Uh, no. Just Sylo continuing to insist that Puss In Boots is Speed Gonzales and my player freezing on that first ad break.
01[14:04] <Froborr> lol
01[14:04] <Froborr> Okay.

  1. The Toei logo is supposed to be Puss in Boots? I thought it was just some random cat mascot in a wide-brimmed hat.
You’ve probably both told me that before and I forgot, though.

  2. After the chat I bent Froborr’s ear for quite a long time about FFXIV. In that conversation it came to light that the ADS enemies in FFXIV resemble the CPU boss from FFIV, of which Froborr is a fan. So, here’s a video describing how the ADS in The Binding Coil of Bahamut, Turn 2 works:
The narrator mentions that there’s a timer after which ADS will “wipe the raid off the map.” As it happens, the “enrage” mechanic in ADS is not a move that instantly kills everyone – which many encounters do have, in particular most Primals – but instead it simply drops all other actions in favor of repeating a room-wide AOE. At the level of gear available at the time this video was made, the group’s healers could fend off this damage with AOE heals for only a short time before exhausting their MP, but with gear currently available after a few years of additional content healers can heal through the damage long enough that most groups prefer to wait out the timer and fight the ADS entirely in the enraged state, because then it’s not doing anything complicated.
