  1. Great vlog as always! (I found it on Youtube) Your discussion of beaches as destinations but not liminal spaces makes me wonder about the choice to set Steven Universe in a seaside town mostly in the off-season. Most of the people who see Beach City would see it as full of people and activity, but we see it as its year-round residents do: vast and empty and claustrophobic and stifling. It’s funny to think that the summer tourists don’t come poking around the enormous, crumbling statue and it’s notable that the city’s year-round residents, who all know each other, seem to know next to nothing about the Crystal Gems.

  2. Huh, I never thought of Beach City as claustrophobic or stifling? Just kind of quiet. But yeah, I see what you’re saying.
