The Very Book Launch!

The wraparound cover to the book The Very Soil.
I’m pleased to announce that The Very Soil: An Unauthorized Critical Study of Puella Magi Madoka Magica is now on sale! It is available on Smashwords (all major ebook formats), CreateSpace (dead tree), and (a first for one of my books, though the others will be following shortly) Kindle store right now; over the next few days it should show up on Amazon, B&N, iTunes, and so on.
This is a thoroughly revised and expanded version of my blog series of the same name, including four entirely new chapters (three on spinoff comics, plus “Against Kyubey” in the Rebellion section), and extensive updates, corrections, and alterations throughout the rest.
Also one hell of a spectacular wraparound cover by Viga, as you can see at the top of this post.
Thanks to Kit Paige for her excellent job editing! Go back her Patreon or Kickstarter, she’s good people and creates good stuff!
Assorted factoids:

  • The e-book MSRP is $3.99, while the print version is $9.49. (Prices may vary depending on where you buy it.)
  • The print version is 144 pages. My favorite is 38, because it has the best sequence of citations: The Golden Bough, the D&D Monster Manual, Harry Potter, and Addressing Rape Reform in Law and Practice.
  • The e-book shows up as 494 pages on my phone, but that means little. It’s the same text as the print version, anyway.
  • If you are receiving this book through my just-completed Kickstarter, I’ll be sending that out tonight. (Please allow shipping time for print copies, e-books I’ll be e-mailing you a 100% off coupon.)
  • I’ll also be adding the e-book of this to the list of reward options for the $10 tier of my Patreon.

  1. Ey, it’s the book with my name in it somewhere. Were you ever able to find the time to read the Nutcracker for yourself?

  2. Yes I did, and it resulted in most of the changes to chapter 20 and the new chapter 21! So thank you very much for that!

  3. So, odd question, but where would you say this would go under the Dewey Decimal System? I have a thing about keeping my bookshelves organised you see.

    • Why would you use the Dewey Decimal System? It’s terrible! Nobody uses Dewey anymore.
Anyway, I’m not a librarian. I just write the things, I don’t shelve them.

  4. I use Dewey mostly out of inertia. As inefficient, Ameri/Eurocentric, and hostile to media and subjects newer than the late 1870’s as it is, it’s what I know best and what I’ve been using to sort my books since I was ten. I’ll probably switch to LoC when I move, and need to re-shelve my books anyway.

    • Well, and that’s the thing: this is a book about a Japanese work in a medium that iirc didn’t exist when the system was created. So… yeah.

  5. Well, I’ll just wing it then, classify Madoka as “Literature”, and stick the book with criticisms of “Literatures of East and Southeast Asia”.
(Things like this are why I’ll never be a librarian.)

  6. 791.433 BLU
Arts And Leisure > Amusements and Recreation > Public Entertainments, TV, Movies > Film, Radio, And Television > Animation
The 800s would be completely incorrect for anything anime, because it’s animated. Manga and manga related criticism would go in 741.5, with the rest of the graphic novels, if you’re curious.
(Librarian talk: Tons of libraries do and will continue to use Dewey, especially public ones, because the schema lends itself to easier non-academic subject browsing. The DDC is just as good as LoC, and is regularly modified to accommodate the 20th and 21st centuries. It’s hardly hostile to new things. Which edition are you using to get that impression?)

  7. Did you see the part where I said I’m not a librarian? I’m not using any edition of any classification system, it’s whatever the library I’m at is using. Which has not been Dewey at any library I’ve gone to since the 90s.

  8. I was responding to TheWonko there, who seems to be putting his copy in 895.6 (Japanese Literature).
If we wanted to go for broke, we could get extra specific and put the book in 791.433952 BLU, to specify that it’s Japanese animation 🙂

  9. Yeah, after I posted, realised that two AM is hardly a good time for amateur library science.
However, since my dead-tree copy arrived today anyway, I was looking for a better place than 895, and your provided number puts it nicely between a Miyazaki artbook and my Dungeons and Dragons books, where there was coincidentally a space just wide enough to fit without having to move anything, so thanks for that.

  10. Apologies for posting rather late, but are you intending to do a 2nd revision on this book, especially in light of new Madoka media like the Concept movie and especially the Madoka Magica Wraith Arc interquel manga?

    • No problem, thank you for the interest!
I have no plans to do a second edition at this time. If, however, they ever make the movie/series/whatever that the concept movie was hinting at, I might expand the book to cover it.
