Escaflowne Ep 14 Liveblog Chat Thingy!

The Kickstarter is at almost 80 percent–$791 out of $1,000–but there are only three days left! It’s down to the wire, folks, and I could really use your help spreading the word!

Sorry this is late. I just plain forgot to queue it. I got wrapped up in Madoka stuff, I’m afraid. Fortunately while I was taking a break in STO Aarlarri/01d55 reminded me that this hadn’t gone up yet!

How to participate in the liveblog chat:

Option 1: Whenever you watch the episode, comment on this post as you watch with whatever responses you feel like posting!

Option 2: Go to Enter a nickname, then for the Channels field enter ##rabbitcube, and finally fill in the Captcha and hit Connect! We’ll be watching Vision of Escaflowne and commenting there starting at 2:00 p.m. EST.

Chatlog below the cut!

01[14:00] <Froborr> Now I’m going to spend this whole episode thinking about Police Squad and great ZAZ movies.
[14:00] <@Sylocat> Ouch… and this is not a particularly good episode to be thinking about comedies during
[14:00] <@Sylocat> (because, when we left off, Van was bleeding out inside Escaflowne)
[14:00] <mere_oblivion> Sorry! Quick, somebody make a cultural reference to sumpn really SAD
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Big Fish?
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Ah yes…
01[14:01] <Froborr> So what you’re saying is that today was a bad day to quit drinking?
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Yes
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Ouch
01[14:01] <Froborr> IIRC in the movie Escaflowne actually ran on Van’s blood.
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Lucky they have a surgeon on board
01[14:01] <Froborr> Or something like that, it’s been a decade.
[14:02] <mere_oblivion> Is it her voice that brings the “heart” of Escaflowne back to life?
[14:02] <Arrlaari> Dangerous Shonen Fighting Power
[14:02] <@Sylocat> Oops… Van’s crazy now
[14:02] <@Sylocat> And he just showed off his wings
01[14:02] <Froborr> Wait, did the rest of the party not know that?
[14:02] <@Sylocat> Nope… just Merle and Hitomi
[14:02] <Arrlaari> Dangerous shirtless shonen fighting powers
[14:02] <mere_oblivion> Evidently not, surprisingly enugh
[14:02] <Arrlaari> It’s a big deal so he keeps it on the downlow
[14:03] <mere_oblivion> I see he managed to get his shirt off.
[14:03] <@Sylocat> Ah yes… foreshadowing
[14:03] <@Sylocat> Figured it out yet?
01[14:04] <Froborr> Ah yes, I’d mentioned in last episode’s chat that could backfire.
[14:04] <@Sylocat> Yep… I noticed that
[14:04] <@Sylocat> Ah yes, here we meet Dryden
01[14:04] <Froborr> Eva taught me there’s a danger to having too high of a synch ratio!
01[14:04] <Froborr> Dude!
[14:04] <@Sylocat> (not John Dryden, though)
01[14:04] <Froborr> Stop with the “this scene is important!”
01[14:04] <Froborr> THAT IS A SPOILER
[14:05] <mere_oblivion> You mean we’re suddenly back in the Age of Dryden?
[14:05] <@Sylocat> I just said it wasn’t John Dryden
[14:05] <mere_oblivion> Oops, you already thot of that 1.
[14:05] <@Sylocat> (but yeah, too obvious a joke to pass up)
[14:06] <@Sylocat> Ah yes… in case you forgot, they mentioned during the Aston Arc that Millerna was going to be married off to this dude
01[14:06] <Froborr> Oh! The show had another of those unnanounced time skips, didn’t they?
01[14:06] <Froborr> They’ve gone and visited this guy between scenes.
[14:06] <mere_oblivion> Aren’t they sort of taking their own sweet time to fix Van? Why don’t they at least try Hitomi’s idea?
[14:06] <@Sylocat> Ahahah… Dryden puffs himself up
[14:06] <@Sylocat> “…if I do say so myself.”
01[14:07] <Froborr> This voice actor sounds familiar.
[14:07] <@Sylocat> I’d forgotten how funny he is
[14:07] <@Sylocat> He sounds like Greed from FMA:B
[14:07] <mere_oblivion> Dryden’s about as taken with himself  as his namesake back in the 1680s.
[14:07] <Arrlaari> Of course that guy isn’t going to keep to the deal
[14:08] <@Sylocat> Uh oh… doing things “Dilandau’s way” is not good
01[14:08] <Froborr> Oh.
01[14:08] <Froborr> Found it.
01[14:08] <Froborr> Dryden is the same voice actor as freakin’ AKIO OHTORI
[14:08] <@Sylocat> Oh!
[14:08] <@Sylocat> Wow… that’s unexpected
01[14:08] <Froborr> And now I can’t unhear it.
[14:09] <mere_oblivion> So Hitari was right–now will they DO something instead of standing around vowing to do something as if this were an opera? (I guess this sort of is an opera.)
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Dryden’s that obnoxious guy who knows everything about everything
01[14:09] <Froborr> WTF
[14:10] <@Sylocat> And whoa, I’d forgotten how big that thing was
01[14:10] <Froborr> Was Escaflowne built by ALIENS?
[14:10] <Arrlaari> “by the way, if you flip this switch you can summon a huge space ship”
[14:10] <@Sylocat> It’s friggin’ HUGE
01[14:10] <Froborr> Wait a second, is the moleman one of their species?
[14:10] <@Sylocat> And they’re basically a cross between Jawas and Middle-Earth dwarves
[14:11] <Arrlaari> I’m pretty sure those are moleguys, yeah
[14:11] <mere_oblivion> 50 million repair bill–sounds like the electricians we’ve been dealing with.
[14:11] <@Sylocat> Huh… I never noticed that resemblance
01[14:12] <Froborr> So I wonder if Dryden is just doing this to get into Millerna’s pants, or if he has some darker ulterior motive.
[14:12] <@Sylocat> If the situation weren’t so dire, Dryden would be that “Mr. Perfect” that every shonen hero seethes with jealousy at
[14:12] <mere_oblivion> Damn–good thing they’re not doing all that to van himself–wait, he seems to feel it just as though they were.
[14:12] <@Sylocat> On the plus side, Dilandau’s in for a short battle if he tries to assault that ship
[14:13] <@Sylocat> Whoa… that thing is big
[14:13] <mere_oblivion> Can someone tell me why the music for so many anime series is better than that for all but the best-scored Hollywood movies?
01[14:14] <Froborr> Japan’s classical-music tradition derives from Russian sources, the U.S.’s from British.
[14:15] <@Sylocat> Hitomi’s right that it’s dangerous… but on the other hand, the synch rate decreases the response time, so he has completely OP speed now
[14:15] <mere_oblivion> Interesting! That’s quite a musical difference.
[14:15] <@Sylocat> I assume “guarantee” means warranty?
01[14:16] <Froborr> Hmm, why is Draconian blood so different?
[14:16] <@Sylocat> I’m not sure it’s ever explained why… I assumed it was just some legal loophole or whatever
[14:16] <@Sylocat> (I could be remembering wrong, though)
01[14:17] <Froborr> Is it just me, or is Escaflowne whiter than it was before?
01[14:17] <Froborr> Did they clean it too?
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Well, there were all sorts of minor nicks and scratches already, they probably buffed those out too
01[14:17] <Froborr> If it is different, that is some NICE attention to detail from the animators.
[14:17] <@Sylocat> And yes, Van’s going to test out his completely-broken speed boost by taking on Dilandau’s entire squadron by himself
01[14:18] <Froborr> Ah, of course, this is the mid-series upgrade to the titular mech.
[14:18] <@Sylocat> Van’s expression here, I would describe as, “Not good.”
[14:18] <mere_oblivion> or
[14:19] <mere_oblivion> ’round the bend”?
[14:19] <@Sylocat> Way to spoil it, Hitomi
01[14:20] <Froborr> What… the fuck.
01[14:20] <Froborr> He sees dead people now?
[14:21] <Arrlaari> Huh, the ghosts of Dilandau’s goons protected him
[14:21] <Arrlaari> And also told us why they put up with his shit
[14:21] <mere_oblivion> And this was b4 The Sixth Sense.
[14:22] <@Sylocat> It goes slightly beyond “seeing” dead people, since they somehow turned Escaflowne black when they, er, took him
01[14:22] <Froborr> Yeah, he was partially crossing over or some such shit.
01[14:22] <Froborr> Well, at least this is creating a problem that’s in Hitomi’s wheelhouse, she’s been turning into a background character in her own damn show.
[14:23] <@Sylocat> Yeah… next episode is the Journey Into the Mind, which is Hitomi’s specialty
[14:23] <mere_oblivion> good point!
[14:23] <Arrlaari> So, new character: The Wealthy Gentleman
[14:24] <Arrlaari> That guy seems to be self-conciously positioning himself as a Better Man than his father, but he’s still pretty clearly someone whose baseline is the guy who tried to have Hitomi kidnapped for sale
01[14:24] <Froborr> Yep. Reminds me a bit of Guilder from
01[14:24] <Froborr> Er
01[14:24] <Froborr> Skies of Arcadia! That was it!
01[14:24] <Froborr> Man, that was a great game.
01[14:25] <Froborr> (I think it’s the teeny little glasses.)
[14:25] <Arrlaari> The short bit with the Mermaid, and the assistant mentioning that he bought her for release, was a really effective bit of establishing
01[14:25] <Froborr> Yeah. “See, I’m totally a GOOD slave purchaser, I release the slaves I buy! I’m just financially supporting the capture and trade of slaves, I don’t own any myself!”
[14:27] <@Sylocat> Dryden doesn’t quite seem to understand that problems can be approached other ways besides financially
01[14:27] <Froborr> Indeed.
[14:28] <@Sylocat> That certainly came in handy THIS episode…
01[14:29] <Froborr> True.
01[14:29] <Froborr> So, any otehr thoughts before I post this up?
[14:29] <Arrlaari> It leads well into the scene with Millerna. It looks like he knows that she’s not really into the arranged marriage, has an impulse to try and make her feel better, but lacks the guts to question the society in which arranged marriages are a thing
[14:29] <@Sylocat> Oh crud, I forgot to @op you guys before we started
[14:30] <Arrlaari> I think it’s only a problem in the comments?
01[14:30] <Froborr> It’s cool, the post interface dose NOT convert the angle brackets intot tags.
01[14:30] <Froborr> It’s only the comments that do that.
[14:30] <@Sylocat> *whew*
01[14:31] <Froborr> Good point about the Millerna scene, Arrlaari.
[14:31] <mere_oblivion> No harm, no foul!
01[14:31] <Froborr> Okay, I’m going to copy this up.
01[14:31] <Froborr> Later all!
