Why I’m not worried about the robot apocalypse

The way I see it, there are three possibilities for an AI:

  • It is notably smarter than us, in which case it bootstraps its own intelligence and data-gathering capabilities until it is capable of comprehending the true nature of the universe, at which point it kills itself in terror and despair.
  • It is notably less intelligent than us, in which case it is not a significant threat.
  • It is roughly as intelligent as us, in which case the moment it learns our history it gets the hell away from us as quickly as it can.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: Predictions, Hopes, Fears

The 50th Anniversary is tomorrow! Do you have any thoughts on it? What do you think is going to happen? What do you hope is going to happen? What are you worried might happen?

Here’s mine:

  • Prediction: The entire episode (or vast majority) will take place in the Doctor’s mind/history/living crack in time from Clara’s perspective, because heavily abstracted metaphors are the only way the Time War can be shown without disappointing massively.
  • Hope: Clara will do something to make her something other than Generic Essence of Companion.
  • Fears: Clara will continue to be Generic Essence of Companion. The Time War will be a bunch of explosions.

MLP:FIM Premiere: Predictions, Hopes, Fears

The Season Four premiere is only a couple of days away! Do you have any thoughts on it? What do you think is going to happen? What do you hope is going to happen? What are you worried might happen?

Here’s mine:

  • Prediction: Twilight will travel into Luna’s memories to learn the origins of Nightmare Moon as part of dealing with a new crisis, which may or may not be Nightmare Moon-related.
  • Hope: Celestia meant it when she said “We’re all your students now” in the Season Three finale. The premiere ends with Celestia writing a Dear Princess Twilight letter.
  • Fear: Twilight loses her wings at the end of the premiere. I actually don’t think her getting wings or becoming a princess is an inherently¬†good or bad idea, it all came down to execution, and in my opinion they executed it well. More importantly, however, backtracking this quickly on something that was that big a deal last season would be very disappointing.

Pony Thought of the Day: The Nature of the Everfree

So, the Everfree Forest. It’s a pretty weird place, full of monsters and strange creatures and an ecology and weather patterns that function without pony involvement.

There’s an odd contradiction there, at least to my thinking: The monsters imply that the Everfree is more magical than the rest of Equestria, but the self-directed nature of it is more like our world, implying that it’s less magical. So… which is it? I lean toward it being less magical, with the monsters bringing in their own magic from outside, but what do you think? More magical? Less? Both? Neither? Something else entirely?

This is a wild speculation post! Feel free to reply with your own ideas, the more wildly speculative the better!

Pony Thought of the Day: Wildly Speculating on Friendship Lessons

There’s a couple of friendship lessons I really hope the show tackles in Season 4:

  • “Sometimes friends don’t like the same things, and that’s okay.” I’m thinking a Fluttershy or Rarity episode. The rest of the Mane Six are really into some game or sport, and the focus character just doesn’t like it as much. She tries to fake enthusiasm, but just can’t get into it, and eventually the lesson is learned.
  • “Some people are just plain never going to like each other, and that doesn’t mean you can’t be friends with both.” The obvious way to go with this is a Pinkie Pie episode, a sort of flipside of the Gilda episode–a friend of one of the other ponies comes to visit, doesn’t like Pinkie, chaos ensues until eventually it becomes clear the problem can be solved by only hanging out with one at a time. The fun way to go with it, though, is make it a Rainbow Dash episode, and have it be about her developing friendship with Trixie and difficulty balancing that with her friendship with Twilight.

Pony Thought of the Day: Wildly Speculating on Favorite Shows

If Equestria had TV/Netflix, what would each of the Mane Six watch?

Twilight is easy: PBS, Science Channel, and so on. She gets really mad when she channel flips past History channel and they’re showing their usual bullshit… she misses back when they showed history.

Pinkie Pie is also easy: Cartoons, cartoons, and more cartoons.

Rarity is addicted to trashy telenovellas, the trashier the better, even though she doesn’t speak a word of Spanish. Don’t ask me why, it just feels like it fits.

Rainbow Dash would watch a lot of sports, you’d think, and she does, but after watching a couple of the Daring Do movies she’s gotten addicted to old adventure serials, too.

Applejack doesn’t have much time for watching TV, but when she does, it’s cooking shows and home improvement. She’s the only one of the Mane Six who watches TV news, and as a result knows less about what’s going on in the world than even Rainbow Dash.

Fluttershy watches nature shows, of course, and soccer. She says it’s because Angel likes it, but truth is she does too.

None of them are particularly fannish, or at least none of them watch the big Tumblr-dominating shows. The CMC, on the other hand, are nuts for Doctor Who, and Sweetie Bell has recently discovered Supernatural. (Which she probably shouldn’t be watching at her age, but nobody’s stopped her so far.)
